Non-profit organizations supporting communities affected by this year's wildfires can now apply for grants of up to $15,000 through United Way British Columbia. The funding is the first phase of support being distributed through the United for BC Wildfire Recovery Fund, which was established using donations from individuals, businesses and other supporters.

The immediate response grants are intended to help community organizations address urgent and emerging needs, including food security, transportation, mental health support, outreach services and other local response efforts. 'Experience shows that recovery needs remain long after the smoke has cleared,” United Way BC said in an Aug. 13 release.

The organization said it is taking a phased approach designed to support communities during the immediate response to wildfires and throughout their longer-term recovery. Additional grants supporting recovery, resilience and community well-being are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

United Way BC has already provided assistance to organizations responding to the 2026 wildfire season, including Shxwhá:y Village First Nation, which has welcomed people displaced by wildfire activity. Tyrell Williams of Shxwhá:y Village First Nation said the funding helped the community provide evacuees with hot meals, essential supplies, cultural activities and a welcoming place to stay.

'This funding has eased some of the financial pressure and allowed us to focus on what matters most, making sure people feel cared for, supported and treated with dignity,” Williams said. United Way BC has experience supporting communities through emergencies and disasters across the province. Its work focuses on emergency response, children and youth, seniors, mental health and food security.
