Spencerport Fire District Awarded State Grant to Support Recruitment and Retention — Spencerport Fire District Spencerport Fire District Awarded State Grant to Support Recruitment and Retention SPENCERPORT, N. Y. — The Spencerport Fire District is proud to announce it was selected as a recipient of the SFY 2025–2026 Recruitment & Retention Grant Program, receiving an award totaling $24,710.
The grant, funded by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, is designed to help volunteer fire departments strengthen recruitment efforts, improve member retention, and support initiatives that promote the long-term sustainability of emergency services.
Funding awarded to the Spencerport Fire District will support several key initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining volunteers, including: Leadership Training and Development — Design and delivery of targeted, in-house leadership and intergenerational training programs.
The funding will help establish a more robust line officer training program that integrates mentorship and encourages firefighter engagement in leadership roles earlier in their volunteer careers. Junior Firefighter Program — Support for the launch of a new Junior Firefighter Program designed to engage youth ages 14 to 18 in the fire service.
Grant funding will be used to purchase essential protective gear and recruitment materials to promote participation and ensure safety during training activities. Marketing and Advertising — Enhanced community engagement through both traditional and digital media efforts aimed at attracting new volunteers while strengthening positive relationships within the community.
Health and Wellness — Support for initiatives focused on the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of volunteer firefighters, recognizing the importance of overall health in recruitment and long-term retention. The Spencerport Fire District continues to invest in community engagement, volunteer recruitment, and member support initiatives.
This grant funding will help address the recruitment and retention challenges facing volunteer fire departments nationwide by allowing the district to create flexible, engaging programs that better align with today’s demanding schedules and limited personal time.
