Republic of Korea, Iraq and UNDP Initiative to Support Displacement-Affected Communities is sponsored by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This five-year initiative supports sustainable resettlement and recovery for internally displaced persons, returnees, and displacement-affected communities across Anbar, Kirkuk, Ninewa, and Salah al-Din.

org/iraq/press-releases/republic-korea-iraq-and-undp-partner-advance-durable-solutions-displacement-affected-communities) * Republic of Korea, Iraq and UNDP Partner To Advance Durable Solutions For Displacement-Affected Communities ## Republic of Korea, Iraq and UNDP Partner to Advance Durable Solutions for Displacement-Affected Communities **Baghdad, Iraq – 17 August 2026** – The Ministry of Migration and Displacement (MoMD), the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched a USD 10 million initiative to support the sustainable resettlement for internally displaced persons, returnees and displacement- affected communities across Anbar.

Kirkuk, Ninewa and Salah-al Din. Funded by the Government of the Republic of Korea through KOICA and implemented by UNDP, the initiative will support communities through housing and community infrastructure, livelihoods, mental health and psychological support. and peacebuilding activities.

Dr. Karim Al-Nouri, Deputy Minister of Migration and Displacement, expressed his appreciation for such projects, noting that they are aligned with the needs and priorities of returnees from displacement in the targeted governorates.

“This partnership supports the Government of Iraq’s efforts to help displaced families and returnees rebuild their lives and achieve safe and sustainable return,” said Amer Abbas Zghair, Director General of the Planning and Follow-up Department at the Ministry of Migration and Displacement. “The project responds to community priorities by addressing housing, essential infrastructure, livelihoods and social cohesion.

” “The Republic of Korea is pleased to support this important partnership with the Government of Iraq and UNDP,” said Yeon Je Ho, Iraq Country Director of KOICA. “Through KOICA’s USD 10 million contribution, we aim to deliver tangible improvements for families and communities as they rebuild their homes and livelihoods.

” “This partnership is about helping families move from displacement and vulnerability towards recovery, stability and renewed confidence in the future,” said Titon Mitra, Resident Representative of UNDP Iraq. “Together with the Government of Iraq and KOICA, we will turn this commitment into practical results for communities affected by displacement and return.

” By bringing together support for housing, , essential community services, livelihood, mental health and psychological support, and peacebuilding activities, the partnership will help families and communities rebuild with greater stability and confidence.

Over the next five years, it is expected to support more than 18,000 people, across the four governorates, with particular focus on women-headed households, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

This will include support to help families rehabilitate safer homes and restore access to essential facilities and services, including education, health centres, water supply systems and shared spaces that support daily life and recovery.

Livelihood support will include climate-resilient agricultural assistance to 168 farmers, while 336 people will receive training and grants to establish small and medium-sized enterprises, alongside vocational training, toolkits and agricultural inputs. Community-based mental health and psychosocial support will be provided to 2,440 community members.

Local Peace Committees will be strengthened, alongside social cohesion assessments to support reconciliation and conflict prevention. Activities will focus on Al-Qaim and Rummanah in Anbar, Hawija and Daquq in Kirkuk, Sinjar in Ninewa, and Baiji in Salah al-Din, with specific implementation areas to be refined in coordination with MoMD, KOICA, and UNDP during the project’s inception phase.
