Research and Training Grants from the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) fund early career microbiologists to pursue research and training at a European host institution in a country other than their own. Grants contribute to travel, accommodation, and subsistence costs.
Eligible applicants must be active microbiologists who obtained their highest degree within the last five years or are current PhD students, and must be members of a FEMS Member Society. Two application cycles are offered annually: deadline January 1 for projects starting February onward, and July 1 for projects starting September onward.
The FEMS Journals Grants additionally award 5,000 to 10,000 euros for the professional development of early career scientists in the summer round.

Research and Training Grants assist early career scientists in pursuing research and training at a European host institution in a country other than their own country of residence (and exceptionally to support research and training projects outside Europe). These grants may be used to contribute to travel, accommodation and subsistence costs of making the visit.
1 January 2026 23:59 CET for projects that will start between 27 February 2026 and 26 February 2027. Decisions will be issued to applicants 27 February 2026. 1 July 23:59 2026 CEST for projects that will start between 1 September 2026 and 31 Augustus 2027.
Decisions will be issued to applicants 1 September 2026 . Applicants should be active microbiologists, having obtained their highest degree less than five years prior to the application deadline date or be a PhD student*. They should be a member of a FEMS Member Society.

The FEMS Journals Grants will award an additional € 5,000 to € 10,000 in funding to support and stimulate the professional development of early career scientists. This additional funding would not have been possible without FEMS Journals editors kindly waiving their annual remuneration fee for handling journal manuscripts.
This additional funding will feed directly into the summer round of the FEMS Research and Training Grants and we are grateful to our editors for making this additional funding available.
FEMS Journals and open access Open access is key to supporting the FEMS mission of disseminating high quality research as widely as possible: when high quality, peer reviewed sound science is open access, anyone, anywhere in the world with an internet connection, can read it. All but one of the not-for-profit FEMS journals are fully open access (OA), with one journal, FEMS Microbiology Letters, offering free-to-publish and OA options.
