Global Health Research Catalyzer Funding: Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health: Feinberg School of Medicine Global Health Research Catalyzer Funding The Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health is pleased to offer support to affiliated Northwestern faculty for research in global health.
The Havey Institute for Global Health and its programs are funded through grants and generous donations from individuals, families and public and private organizations and foundations that believe in our mission and share our passion. Join us, and help us improve health around the world.
The purpose of the Global Health Research Catalyzer grant is to provide research support to Northwestern faculty who are a) collecting preliminary data to support a future grant submission and/or b) supplemental support for ongoing sponsored-research for work outside the aims and/or scope of work of the funded project.
The fund is not meant to support the same aims of an existing study or projects that lack a specific plan to obtain sponsor-support. For example, investigators are encouraged to cite a specific RFA from NIH (or other sponsor) to which the catalyzer funds would build the case for a future grant submission. Eligible projects must have a significant component of the study based in a low or middle-income country.
All SU/NU Global Health Knowledge Hub applicants must have a full-time appointment at Northwestern University and be a member of the Institute for Global Health and be partnered with a faculty of Stellenbosch University. For all Primary Care Research Catalyzer applications, award topics must be focused on improving primary care globally.
All applicants must have a full-time appointment at Northwestern University and be a member of the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health. Project leadership/institutions comply with Northwestern Export Controls and International Compliance Policies.
Total budget cannot exceed $25,000 regardless of length of budget period, including all subcontractor costs and indirect expenses to subcontractors. F&A to NU is not allowable. Requests may be made for less than $25k.
Sub-awards to affiliated institutions may include facilities and administration (F&A) of 8% on eligible costs, similar to NIH policy. Total award budget must still fall within limits. Indirect costs to high-income country partners is not allowed.
Annual application deadlines are October 1, February 1 and June 1 by 5 p. m. CST .
There is a rolling deadline for all Primary Care and SU/NU Hub focused award applications. Review Process and Notification All eligible applications will be peer-reviewed. Notification of a decision will be sent within 45 days of submission.
Review criteria will include needs assessment, impact for Northwestern global health community, sustainability, and applicant qualification. To complete this application, you will need to be prepared to upload the following materials. See attached PDF here for Application Materials Checklist.

Budget (PDF or Excel format) Budget may include the following direct expense categories: salary, fringe benefits, medical & lab supplies, equipment, travel, meeting expenses, IRB expenses, patient incentives, laboratory services, books, conference fees, publication expenses. Unallowable expenses include computers and F&A to Northwestern. 4.

Letters of support (2 required, up to 5. Combined as 1 PDF file) It is required that an institutional letter of support come from the LMIC institution where the research will be conducted as well as from the NU PI's division chief and/or department chair. For any education related projects, a letter of support should be included from the Center for Global Health Education leadership.

7. NIH style biosketches or curriculum vitae for key personnel Upon receipt of award, you will need to be prepared to submit a progress report at 10 months. Upon completion of the award, you will need to: Complete a Work-in-Progress presentation to Havey Institute for Global Health faculty and staff.
