Oracle Grants $1M To Study Carbon Capture Potential At Data Center Oracle Grants $1M To Study Carbon Capture Potential At Data Center Image courtesy of Project Jupiter Cloud infrastructure giant Oracle has announced up to $1 million in research funding to evaluate the technical, economic, and environmental feasibility of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) at its Project Jupiter facility and across New Mexico.

The research initiative will specifically analyze methods for safely and efficiently capturing carbon dioxide emissions generated by on-site Bloom Energy fuel cell systems.

Academic institutions, non-profit entities, and industry research partners will focus on establishing viable transportation models, evaluating permanent geological storage formations within New Mexico, and identifying prospective commercial applications for captured industrial CO2.

Mahesh Thiagarajan, Executive Vice President at Oracle Cloud Infrastructure , stated that evaluating CCS technology is a critical step toward achieving 100% carbon-free energy matching for Project Jupiter by 2031, while supporting New Mexico’s broader Energy Transition Act targets ahead of 2045.

The resulting research aims to deliver actionable technical, regulatory, and economic frameworks to guide potential future CCS deployments and regional carbon management infrastructure. Research Package Integrates With Broader Regional Infrastructure Investments The CCS research grant forms part of Oracle’s broader economic and environmental development package associated with the Project Jupiter technology campus in Doña Ana County.

Alongside energy transition research, Oracle’s local commitments include $50 million for municipal water infrastructure upgrades, $360 million in direct support for local schools and public services, and $6. 9 million allocated toward workforce training initiatives.

Relevant: 41% Of Onsite-powered Data Centers Forecast CCUS Integration By 2035 To offset operational water usage, Oracle has partnered with agricultural technology firm Arable on real-time irrigation data systems, conserving an estimated 21 million gallons annually across the Rio Grande-Bravo watershed, exceeding the volume required for Project Jupiter’s cooling and fuel-cell operations.

The Project Jupiter development currently employs nearly 1,000 local construction workers on site and has generated approximately $100 million in state and local tax revenues to date.
