Research Micro Grant

Research Micro Grant is sponsored by Indiana University. This program provides funding for small research projects, research expenses, publishing, and other research-related items in support of faculty research and creative activities that are sustainable through external funding.

Funding & Proposal Support Alicia Gahimer, ord@iu. edu open through June 4, 2027 with quarterly reviews The Research Micro Grant program provides funding for small research projects, research expenses, book subventions, and other research related items in support of faculty research and creative activities that are sustainable through external funding.

All full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty Research scientists and research center directors Lecturers, visiting faculty, postdocs, residents, and emeritus faculty are not eligible Funding and proposal requirements Grant requests may not exceed $3,000. Projects will be limited to one year in duration. The project period begins on the date of the award letter.

Applications for a second Research Micro Grant for the same project or research will not be accepted. Applicants are ineligible to receive any ORD grant support unless they have met the post-award requirements for all prior awards. Proposals focused on the development of teaching or academic programs are not eligible.

Priority will be given to applicants with little to no remaining start-up funds. Letters of support from the Department Chair, consultants and collaborators are required. If awarded, no funds will be transferred without applicable IRB, IACUC, IBC or Research Security/Export Control approvals.

IU research assistants, statisticians, project/lab staff, postdocs, students Data collection, analysis, surveys, study incentives Equipment, supplies, fees, lab services Travel expenses associated with field work Book subventions to support unique components of a scholarly publication that might not be regularly covered by an academic press or other publishing mechanism.

These unique components (i.e., high-quality images, professional design work, commissioned contributions, website development, etc.) must be clearly defined and proven to enhance the overall quality or reception of the publication and its research-based contents. The work must already have been peer reviewed and under contract.

Non-allowable budget items: General publication costs General computer equipment Investigator salary, graduate fee remission Conference attendance and presentations Acknowledge receipt of IU Research support in any presentation or publication of work.

Submit progress reports as follows: end of year Project Status and No-Cost Extension request, a Final Report within 30 days of project completion, and Return on Investment report(s) as requested. System-generated emails with online reporting instructions will be sent to you prior to each progress report due date.

Progress report data requested will include: external submissions, external awards, type of student worker, publications, presentations, media contacts, disclosures and patents. Unused funds will be returned to IU Research. Requests for up to a one-year no cost extension must be approved by the Office for Research Development.

Effective August 1, 2025 : Faculty may have one active individual research grant awarded project from Seed, External Resubmission, Bridge, or Micro Grant at a time. Awardees may not apply for any of these four for any project until their Final Report is received on the current awarded project. Faculty may apply as PI on any other IU Research grant concurrent with an individual research grant stated above.

Submission and review of applications Submissions are accepted continually until June 4, 2027 based on the availability of funding. Submission review deadlines are scheduled quarterly : September 4, December 4, March 5, and June 4. Example: applications received September 5 through December 4 will be reviewed in December.
