Applicants' institutions must provide space and other resources customary for independent investigators. Grant proposals are investigator-initiated and may pursue questions across the cancer research continuum, as long as they fit within an American Cancer Society (ACS) priority research area. These grants typically contribute to the cost of salaries, consumable supplies, and other miscellaneous items required in the research.
Typically, you ARE eligible to submit a proposal if you: Work at a US academic institution or eligible non-profit Are the PI on NO MORE than 1 R01 or R01-equivalent grant at the time of application (An R01-equivalent grant is defined by ACS as an award that is more than $100k direct costs per year for more than 3 years.)
For new RSG applications - Were first appointed as independent, full-time faculty (or equivalent position) LESS than or equal to 8 years ago. Resubmissions from investigators beyond the 8-year cutoff require Program Office approval. Resubmissions of applications from prior cycles will be permitted as needed, with approval from the Program Office, until all resubmissions have been exhausted.
To ask about eligibility extensions due to personal or professional leave, send your questions to grant. eligibility@cancer. org at least 6 weeks before the application deadline.
Current or former RSG grantees are not permitted to apply for a second RSG unless the RSG was funded as part of a special initiative request for applications. Uncertain about whether a position is "independent?" Refer to the "Guidelines for Independence" in the All Grant Policies document.
We encourage applicants to review the grant policies document for additional, detailed information on all applicant and institution eligibility requirements. Research Scholar Grants are funded up to $215,000 per year (direct costs), plus 10% allowable indirect costs, with a project period up to four years. If the grant application deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, applications will be accepted the following business day.
