Responsive Grants (Democracy & Civic Life Initiative) is sponsored by Henry Luce Foundation. The Democracy and Civic Life Initiative welcomes proposals related to equipping citizens for active citizenship, practicing democratic participation, and disseminating successful approaches.

Democracy & Civic Life Initiative - Henry Luce Foundation Our Programs Democracy & Civic Life Strengthening Democratic Culture & Advancing Justice We are committed to repairing and strengthening the frayed fabric of democracy. We believe that democracy is a daily practice, not an abstract ideal; and its viability depends on the results it produces for those who practice it—citizens.

Today, citizens are disengaged, governments—at all levels—are non-responsive, a sense of shared identity and common purpose has eroded, and the institutions intended to serve citizens have been weakened. The Democracy and Civic Life Initiative (formerly Democracy, Ethics, and Public Trust) supports the active involvement of citizens in their own governance, in the places where they can see the outcomes.

We aim to ensure that citizens have access to the resources–information, education, and tools–they need to participate. And we invest in citizen-led efforts to solve practical problems in their communities, which also help to strengthen democratic muscles and rebuild trust in shared institutions. We aspire through our grantmaking to inspire and disseminate new conceptions of American identity and belonging.

Prior to joining the Foundation, Luke worked as a program assistant for the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) where he helped launch the Mercury... Across our grantmaking, we support collaborative, community-engaged research and community-led solutions to the complex challenges that have created deep divisions and inequities in our society. These convictions are present in the work of all our programs.

Through support for innovative museum projects, we strengthen the capacity of museums to support critical dialogues about creativity, difference, and common ground. We believe a more peaceful and collaborative future can be forged by finding common ground across borders and cultures.

With an emphasis on the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and ideas, we seek to promote trust and understanding among Americans and Asians and to increase awareness of Asian American experiences. We invest in culture bearers who are committed to sharing their work with their communities and other publics, and we strengthen the institutions that support them.

To honor our founder’s interest in developing public leadership, the Luce Foundation awards several Public Policy grants to organizations that deepen knowledge about philanthropy and how to execute it effectively. Past grants have supported orientation programs for new members of Congress, the study of the Presidency, and more.
