Responsive Grants (Religion & Theology Program) is sponsored by Henry Luce Foundation. The Religion and Theology Program cultivates diverse knowledge communities to advance a more nuanced public understanding of religion.

It supports knowledge makers who reconsider accepted histories, weave new narratives, and imagine alternative futures, awarding grants primarily to organizations and institutions for dedicated projects, though more flexible funding can also be requested.

Our funding reflects the Foundation's commitment to education, research, knowledge-driven leadership, and the exchange of innovative ideas in the public realm. We aim to learn, along with and from our partners through our grantmaking. Grants are awarded by the Foundation’s six grantmaking programs.

Inquiries should be directed to one of these programs which best matches the inquiring organization’s mission and work. The Luce Scholars Program is a fellowship program for individuals and does not award grants. Museums are a hub for critical dialogues about creativity, societal challenges, and what we can learn from the past.

By supporting innovative art institutions, we strengthen their capacity to facilitate community engagement and human connection. We believe a more peaceful and collaborative future can be forged by finding common ground across cultures. Through the exchange of knowledge and ideas, we seek to promote trust and understanding among Americans and Asians and to increase awareness of Asian American experiences.

Democracy & Civic Life Initiative This effort seeks to nurture democratic practices that foster resilience, trust, and a sense of belonging. In areas as diverse as civic engagement, racial justice, Indigenous sovereignty, and climate change advocacy, the initiative seeks to enable communal self-determination.

Indigenous Knowledge Initiative To ensure that the heritage, customs, and identity of Native communities thrive, we invest in culture bearers who are committed to sharing their work with their communities and the public. We also fund vital institutions that preserve the resilience of Native America.

The Luce Scholars Program provides emerging leaders with immersive cultural and professional experiences that deepen their understanding of Asia’s cultures and people. Religion & Theology Program We seek to cultivate a deeper understanding of religion as a source of division and a site of common ground, an agent of inequality and a force for social transformation.

Our work expands knowledge of religion’s complex and contested place in public life, diversifies intellectual inquiry in this area, and promotes more curious and civil conversations. Although women make up nearly half the workforce, they’re still grossly underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math fields.
