Rights and Governance Program

The Rights and Governance Program is a grant from CS Fund and Warsh-Mott Legacy that supports organizations working to secure constitutional rights, democratic governance, and civil liberties. Grants of up to ,000,000 fund work in agriculture and rural development, environment and natural resources, and research, technology, and innovation.

The program operates internationally across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Asia, with a focus on dissent, government accountability, and protection of civil rights. Eligible applicants are typically nonprofits and civil society organizations engaged in advocacy, litigation, or community organizing to defend democratic institutions.

These are (1) rights and governance (incl. support for initiatives to improve the social, environmental, and governance aspects of international trade agreements); (2) emerging technologies (addressing the potential risks of nanotechnology, synthetic biology, genetic engineering, and related technologies); (3) food sovereignty (incl.

support of grassroots activities in seed saving, soil building, protection of pollinating insects and animals, and traditional agriculture); and (4) just transitions. Grants are for activities in the USA and internationally, including for issues important in developing countries. Applicant organisations must be classified as a 501(c)(3) by the US Internal Revenue Service.

Foreign applicants should note that CSF and WML make a very limited number of direct grants abroad (i.e., without fiscal sponsorship by a US-based organization). The foundations do not provide support to individuals, endowments, or direct lobbying activities. Outside the United States the Foundation has no defined focus countries and provides grants for projects worldwide.

Most grants range from $20,000 to $150,000. Their total annual grant budget is around $3,000,000. Due to their limited capacity and budget, they are able to support only a relatively small number of initiatives and are not accepting unsolicited proposals at this time.

While they cannot guarantee a response to every inquiry, they review submissions periodically and if there is a fit and capacity, a Program Director will contact you.
