We offer the following programs and opportunities for Clemson affiliates and partners. Endowed in memory of Robert H.
Brooks’ late son, Mark Brooks ’91, this fund provides scholarships to undergraduate students majoring in sports relevant programs at Clemson University, including the four legacy programs - sports communication, sports marketing, sports management and motorsports engineering - and others represented by our cohort of faculty fellows. Applicants are reviewed each spring by the departments and awarded the following academic year.

Clemson students seeking travel funding for professional conferences and events to present or professionally engage in sports-related work and activities may apply to the Institute’s student travel grant program.

Our Clemson fellows meet once per semester to share updates on sports science activities at the University. Please email a copy of your CV to John DesJardins at jdesjar@clemson. edu with a cover letter attached describing your interest in the appointment, and your activities and collaborations (past, present or future) that align with the mission of the Institute.
Currently paused for the 2025-26 academic year. Each year, competitive seed grants are awarded to Clemson faculty and researchers to engage in multidisciplinary sports research. Proposals are received through InfoEd each spring and awarded at the start of the next fiscal year.

In addition to the larger collaboration grants, the Institute offers funding in smaller amounts for Clemson sports faculty with research and creative endeavor needs in the amount of $5,000 or less. To apply for director’s funding, submit a one-page proposal outlining your project and use of funds to John DesJardins at jdesjar@clemson. edu .
Named for Brooks’ son and three colleagues who died in a 1993 plane crash, four Legacy Professors are responsible for building a more in-depth program of study within each of their disciplines by recruiting and encouraging other faculty and students to contribute to the Institute’s mission.
RESEARCH & CREATIVE ENDEAVORS IN THE SPORTS SCIENCES (RECESS) SYMPOSIUM Each fall, the Institute hosts a Research and Creative Endeavors in the Sports Sciences (RECESS) Symposium for Clemson faculty, staff, students and guests to present their sports-related activities and network with others.
This is a great opportunity for the sports science community to come together and see how we might partner and support each other academically and in the field. As part of the RECESS Symposium, the Institute will award four GRIT awards to persons or groups engaged in the sports sciences. Categories include research, community outreach, student engagement and the 'friend of the Institute' award.
