SAMHSA Block Grant - Direct Service Evidence-Based Prevention Programming for Youth

SAMHSA Block Grant - Direct Service Evidence-Based Prevention Programming for Youth is sponsored by Arkansas Department of Human Services, Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (OSAMH) (via federal SAMHSA funds). Arkansas receives federal funds from SAMHSA to address problems related to substance use. By law, states are required to use at least 20% of these funds for primary prevention programs.

By law, states are required to use at least 20% of these funds for _primary prevention programs_. These are programs targeted to individuals who do not require treatment for substance use disorders. The Department of Human Services Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (OSAMH)oversees the administration and distribution of these prevention funds across a number of programs.

Some have a statewide reach, while others target specific counties or communities. DAABHS funds three types of projects. 1.

Direct service evidence-based prevention programming for _parents and families_ 2. Direct service evidence-based prevention programming for _youth_ 3. Community-based environmental prevention strategies targeting _community-level change_ Some Arkansas communities are disproportionately affected by substance use.

Thus, DAABHS prioritizes projects that address disparities in health literacy and access to health resources.

Expected outcomes from all DAABHS projects are to: * Maintain and expand a comprehensive system of prevention services that are community-driven, strategically focused, research-based, and culturally relevant to Arkansas individuals, families, and communities * Reduce the incidence of problems related to the use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs DAABHS partners with organizations that possess the expertise and capacity to implement and evaluate innovative prevention programs on a large scale.

We contract with each of these organizations using the subsets of SAMHSA funding described below.
