Scholars' Travel Fund | Campus Research Board The Office of the Provost and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation (OVCRI) are partnering on an expansion of the Scholars’ Travel Fund (STF) to support specialized faculty.
The Specialized Faculty Scholars’ Travel Fund (SF-STF) program pilot will offer partial support for travel to one conference convening per year for specialized faculty to present original scholarly research and/or creative work. Support will be provided at standardized amounts by destination, as with the STF program for tenure-track faculty.
SF-STF support can supplement, but will not reduce, professional development funds available under the Non-Tenure Faculty Coalition collective bargaining agreement. This pilot program took effect August 16, 2022, with the same monthly deadlines. This three-year pilot period has been extended through June 30, 2026, pending further evaluation of the program's effectiveness.
The Scholars' Travel Fund (STF) is a Campus Research Board program that supports University of Illinois faculty members who are presenting original scholarly research and creative work at academic gatherings, such as national disciplinary meetings and specialized conferences.
Please note that participation as a keynote speaker, discussant, chair, or invited lecturer at individual campuses, and research-related travel is not supported by the STF program. While funding will be provided for up to three faculty members for the same presentation, each faculty member must submit a separate application.
STF support is limited to Illinois full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members, full-time lecturers, University High School faculty members, Legacy Research Scholars, and specialized faculty members in targeted units . Funding is not available for emeritus/ae faculty, rehired retirees or visiting appointments (i.e., visiting lecturer, visiting assistant professor, visiting research associate professor, etc.).
To ensure the availability of STF support for faculty who most need it, the Campus Research Board will not normally grant STF awards to applicants with ample discretionary funds (e.g., start-up funds, HASS, support associated with administrative or named faculty positions). The Campus Research Board considers $10,000 or more to be ample for assistant professors and $5,000 or more to be ample for all other applicants.
Faculty with discretionary funds above these thresholds will not normally be eligible for STF awards. Applicants must indicate approximate total of currently available discretionary funding including: A.) Funds remaining from start-up packages B.)
Allocations from departments or other campus units that support the applicant’s research/creative activities C.) Funds awarded to support the applicant’s research associated with academic appointments either in administrative positions or in named faculty positions (i.e., endowed chairs or professorships).
Exceptions to the discretionary funds threshold policy can be made in cases of clear need and with the support of the department executive officer. Applicants who wish to be granted an exception to the policy must provide a detailed explanation for why STF support is needed on the application. This should include a description of how all current discretionary funds are otherwise committed.
Applicants must download the Executive Officer Exception Form from the online application, complete it, have the department executive officer sign it, and upload it to the application. NIH's June 1 omnibus reset added Direct-to-Phase II to the STTR program for the first time. The change compresses university spinouts' funding timeline from three years to fifteen months, but the 30% research-institution subaward, feasibility-evidence rules, and IP licensing mechanics are not yet sorted at most universities.
Read articleDARPA and NSF launched a joint program on June 1 to fund university work on AI interpretability, control, and adversarial robustness. Awards run $750K to $3M+ per project, the forum launches this summer, and the universities listed in the AI Forge repository will sit closest to the money. The Request for Information closes June 22.
Read articleOn June 1, 2026, DARPA and the National Science Foundation announced AI Forge — a jointly governed forum that will fund, guide, and manage university-led research on AI interpretability, AI control, and adversarial robustness. The RFI on sam.gov closes June 22. The forum itself will be administered by a new nonprofit launching in summer 2026. The structure is what matters: this is not a one-off solicitation, it is a multi-year venue for university-government-industry research that operates outside the normal merit-review timelines of either agency. What university research teams should be doing in the seventeen-day window between the announcement and the RFI deadline — and what the forum model means for federal AI funding through FY 2028.
