Scholarship Program (WAAW Foundation Scholarship) is sponsored by WAAW (Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women) Foundation. The WAAW Foundation Scholarship enables female college students in Africa to pursue STEM-related courses. This scholarship provides financial assistance to help students focus on their academic goals and promote women's engagement in STEM through community volunteering.

With this scholarship, you are free to focus on achieving your academic goal and volunteer to give back to your community and promote the engagement of women in STEM through the STEM Outreach Chapter at their university.

We are looking for scholars that show a need, have the passion, and drive to make a difference in their community. This section contains all of the information you need in order to successfully submit an application. We encourage you to review it fully in order to ensure that you have the best possible chance of being selected for the award.

Female students of African origin, living and studying in Africa. Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program. Studying STEM-related courses in a University or college in Africa.

Presently a first or second year student or a third-year student for a 5-year course in a University. Ability to demonstrate financial need Excellent Academic Record. Proven leadership, volunteering, and community service Below the age of 32 years.

What is the WAAW Scholarship Program? The WAAW Scholarship Program supports young African women pursuing STEM education at undergraduate level. How can I apply for the WAAW Scholarship?

To apply, visit our website during the application period and complete the online form. How much is the scholarship award? The WAAW Foundation scholarship is a one-time award of $500.

Which courses are accepted? Only STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) related courses are accepted and will be considered for the scholarship offer. Medical and Nursing students are not eligible to apply for the WAAW Foundation scholarship but pharmacy students are.

I am a male, can I apply? No, the scholarship is only available to females. Can I get scholarship offers for other programs?

We do not fund graduate (Masters, MBA, or Ph. D.) programs, second or subsequent degrees.

How many references are required? 2 references. One MUST be written by a professor from your institution of study and the other from an academic supervisor/advisor or mentor .

What are the required documents to be submitted? 1 scanned copy of your school ID card. Signed and sealed copy of your current university transcript.

(Required during the Second Stage Review) What are some tips for writing a strong personal statement for the WAAW Foundation scholarship? When writing your personal statement, it is important to be honest and genuine. Share your story and why you are passionate about STEM.

Be sure to highlight your academic achievements, leadership skills, and community service. You can also talk about the challenges you have faced and how you have overcome them. What are the chances of winning the WAAW Foundation scholarship?

The chances of winning the WAAW Foundation scholarship depend on the strength of your application. However, the scholarship is highly competitive, so it is important to submit a well-written application that highlights your academic achievements, leadership skills, and commitment to STEM. I met all criteria but was not awarded the scholarship, why?

We are sorry to hear that you were not accepted. The scholarship application is very competitive and there were other applicants that showed more need. Kindly check back next year.

How is the scholarship payment structured? The scholarship is disbursed in two tranches (installments): First Payment: Issued after the scholar successfully completes at least three (3) outreach activities. Second Payment: Released upon completion of a total of six (6) outreach activities.

What are the requirements to qualify for the second payment? To qualify for the second tranche of the scholarship, scholars must: Be an active member of a WAAW Foundation STEM Chapter (or start one if none exists at their institution). Participate in at least six (6) STEM outreach programs.

Can I lose my scholarship if I don’t meet the outreach requirements? Yes. Failure to complete at least three (3) outreaches or to maintain active chapter engagement may affect your eligibility for scholarship payment and your continued recognition as an active WAAW Scholar.

Are outreach activities mandatory? Yes. Outreach is a key part of the WAAW Foundation’s mission to inspire and empower more African girls in STEM.

Scholars are expected to lead or actively participate in outreach events that impact their local communities. What if my school doesn’t have a WAAW STEM Chapter? If your institution doesn’t currently have a WAAW STEM Chapter, you’ll be supported to establish one as part of your scholar responsibilities.

Our Programs Team will guide you through the setup and approval process. Will there be training or orientation for new scholars? 2 references.

One MUST be written by a professor from your institution of study and the other from an academic supervisor/advisor or mentor . Absolutely! Selected scholars will participate in a virtual onboarding and orientation program where we’ll guide you through expectations, reporting templates, and opportunities available during your scholarship year.
