The Georgia Department of Education is laser-focused on ensuring the safety of students, teachers, staff, and community members on school campuses each day. Led by State School Superintendent Richard Woods, the Department is focused on prevention and ensuring schools have the resources to create a safe environment, as well as addressing students’ mental health and wellbeing.

* Every public school in the state develops a school safety plan in conjunction with local law enforcement and emergency management * Districts and schools have received multiple rounds of grant funding to support school safety efforts * Dedicated Office of Whole Child Supports works to centralize safety and health resources for schools * GaDOE and GEMA/HS Seal of Preparedness recognizes schools’ safety efforts and incentivizes best practices * Mental Health Awareness Training available at no cost to all educators in the state * Statewide support for implementing Multi-Tiered System of Supports (GaMTSS) to ensure all students receive necessary support for success in a secure and positive learning environment ## Georgia Center for School Safety Managed in partnership with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS), the Georgia Center for School Safety is a website clearinghouse of school safety resources and updated training for Georgia schools and community partners.

The site allows school and district staff, community partners, and the public to access school safety training, resources, and guidelines. Web and in-person trainings are available on active shooter response, bus safety, de-escalation, emergency operations planning, school safety assessments, severe weather, and more.

This year, the Georgia Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS), in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Education, will host the Georgia School Safety & Homeland Security Conference in Savannah, GA on June 8-9, 2026.

The 2026 conference will feature safety planning in action, expert speakers discussing critical topics including life-saving action steps and mitigation strategies, recent legal and education changes, and leadership during crisis situations. Registration information will be released soon.

## School Safety Resources ### Superintendent’s School Safety Checklist In collaboration with GEMA/HS, the Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA), and the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA), GaDOE’s Office of Whole Child Supports developed the Superintendent’s School Safety Checklist.

The checklist is intended to be a resource for superintendents and denotes administrative law regulations requiring district-level oversight. ### School Safety Plan Guidance The State of Georgia Guide for School Safety Plans was designed to be a resource for school administrators to understand legal requirements and best practices in the development of their School Safety Plans.

Schools are encouraged to use these recommendations in conjunction with local policies, resources, and community stakeholders to develop plans appropriate for their communities ### Anti-Bullying Model Policy GaDOE worked with legislators to develop a model anti-bullying policy to be utilized in districts and schools.
