Sci-Quest: An Interactive Guided Hero's Journey Through the Scientific Method | IES Sci-Quest: An Interactive Guided Hero's Journey Through the Scientific Method Small Business Innovation Research Zenobia Therapeutics, Inc. (09/12/2025 - 05/11/2026) The purpose of this project is to develop and evaluate a prototype of Sci-Quest , an AI-enhanced, gamified science learning platform designed to support high school students in communities with economic challenges and limited exposure to biotechnology careers.
The goal is to increase science engagement, strengthen literacy and comprehension, and build awareness of high-wage STEM opportunities. We are focused on regions like San Diego's Promise Zone and border communities, where biotechnology industries thrive just miles from schools that remain disconnected from these fields.
Built as an extension of the XplorStem Academy platform, Sci-Quest transforms traditional science curriculum into an interactive "Hero's Journey" aligned with the scientific method. AI-driven writing support and adaptive vocabulary games aim to address language and literacy barriers while augmented skills labs teach hands-on laboratory techniques.
The platform follows Universal Design principles to ensure accessibility, cultural relevance, and long-term adaptability for classrooms serving diverse student populations. The pilot will be conducted with three school districts in San Diego County's Promise Zone and border region that serve communities with economic barriers and limited exposure to biotechnology careers.
It will involve three experienced science teachers and approximately 150–280 students. Iterative classroom testing will guide refinement of the user experience, AI functionality, and data infrastructure. The project team includes STEM coordinators, CTE project leaders, and district administrators, positioning the platform for future implementation and broader national adoption across high schools with emerging biotech programs.

The Department of Education's IES SBIR program is one of the most overlooked non-dilutive funding sources for education-technology startups. It funds prototypes at $250K and proven products at $1M with no equity taken. Here is how the FY2026 tracks work, what reviewers reward, and why the June 29 deadline is tighter than it looks.
Read articleThe Institute of Education Sciences has opened its first research competitions since early 2025: five FY27 competitions due October 1, 2026, with roughly $250 million planned across three tranches. But $224 million in withheld FY2025 funds may expire September 30, and topics are now fixed through FY2029.
Read articleThe Institute of Education Sciences launched no new grant competitions in all of FY2026. On August 6, 2026 it announced a three-tranche FY27 restart: five topic-agnostic competitions due October 1, flagship field-initiated grants held until December, and eight research topics that IES says will persist through FY2029.
