Announcement of changes call 2026 Scientific Meetings and Consultations | NWO In order to continue to use the Scientific Meetings and Consultations instrument in a targeted manner in the future, an evaluation was carried out with input from, among others, the Science research field, and the Science Round Tables were asked for advice.
In mid-September, based on the input gathered, the Science domain board designed the framework for the Scientific Meetings and Consultations call for proposals 2026. The purpose of the instrument remains largely the same, namely to promote academic networks and cooperation at the national and international level. The budget to be requested and the assessment process will also remain largely unchanged.
However, a number of aspects will (partly) be given a different focus. These include: More emphasis on national (recurring) meetings. Meetings that take place on a rotating basis abroad can only apply for funding (for the editions that take place in the Netherlands) if at least half of the time (the last three times) they have taken place in the Netherlands.
Greater focus on suitability for the Science domain (including the content of the meeting/consultations and frameworks for speakers and participants), as it remains an instrument that is deployed from within the NWO Domain Science. Interdisciplinary meetings will still be possible. Changed period for how far in advance a proposal can be submitted.
This will be shortened to a minimum of 6 months prior to the meeting, instead of the current possibility of submitting a proposal up to 1 year in advance. This will provide more insight into the actual programme of the meetings and make it possible to explain more clearly why funding from this instrument is necessary. In the longer term, the Science domain board expects to limit recurring meetings.
The board therefore encourages the field to start looking for additional funding sources in order to compensate for any current dependence on Scientific Meetings and Consultations support. NWO Domain Science is happy to help explore the possibilities, such as joining conferences organised by NWO Domain Science.
The Scientific Meetings and Consultations call 2026 will be finalised at the end of this year, and the new conditions will take effect in January 2026. Until then, the current call will remain open and proposals can be submitted as long as the call budget has not been exhausted.
According to the current listing, eligibility includes: Open to researchers affiliated with Dutch universities and recognized research institutions. NWO funds research across all scientific disciplines in the Netherlands. International researchers may participate as co-applicants in collaborative projects.
