Income Support, Emergency/One-time Financial Assistance Low-income individuals and households Has eligibility requirements: **General Program Requirements:**Generally, Modest Needs offers Self-Sufficiency Grants to qualified individuals/households who need help to afford two specific types of expenses: * Unexpected or emergency expenses that an individual or family living paycheck-to-paycheck could not possibly afford without a short-term hand-up.

* Monthly bills that an individual or family living paycheck-to-paycheck cannot afford to pay at the time of their application because of a documentable extenuating circumstance that occurred within the past year.

Additional General Requirements: * You intend to apply for assistance either for yourself or for a person living in your home; * Your household has at least one active bank account OR has filed a Federal Tax Return within in the past two years; * You have regular access to a computer and the Internet and can check your email and the Modest Needs website daily for the entire time that your application is active; * You have the ability to access a scanner or a fax machine for long enough to scan and upload or fax the documentation to support your application that Modest Needs will request from you during the grant application process; * If you rent (rather than own) your home, your household has a legal lease that your landlord and a member of your household both have signed.

This lease must show the monthly cost of your rental, whether or not you pay all of this amount yourself; * Your household passes their 'income' and 'employment' tests, both of which are explained in the application process.

**Residency Requirements:** You are a legal resident of the United States or Canada **Income Requirements:** They make Self-Sufficiency Grants in an effort to assist individuals and families who, because they are working and live just above the poverty level, are ineligible for most types of conventional social assistance but who, all the same, are living one or two lost paychecks away from the kind of financial catastrophe that eventually leads to homelessness.

**Does the program require the client to be able to work?

:** * At least one adult member of the applicant's household must be documentable employed at the time of the application AND * The primary (largest) source of income for each applicant's household must be either income earned from employment, or child support payments; or Veteran's Benefits; or retirement income (including Social Security retirement benefits) **Age Requirements:** 18+ Modest Needs offers grants designed to promote the self-sufficiency of individuals and families who, because they are working and live just above the poverty level, are ineligible for most types of conventional social assistance but who, all the same, are living one or two lost paychecks away from the kind of financial catastrophe that eventually leads to homelessness.
