Every 2 months our volunteers are brought together so we can provide updated training and relevant information so they can better help their clients. In exchange for sponsoring breakfast or lunch at one of these gatherings, you would be able to make an informational presentation or have material handed out to our volunteers about the services you provide.

Sharon Smith – ssmith@vcifl. org The Senior Companion Program provides grants to organizations with a dual purpose: to engage persons 55 years and older, particularly those with limited incomes, in volunteer service to meet critical community needs; and to provide a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of the volunteers.

The AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in this program provide supportive, individualized services to help older adults with special needs maintain their dignity and independence. Where We Serve in Central Florida VCI’s Senior Companion Program serves homebound seniors across Orange and Seminole counties.

Volunteers are matched with clients near their homes in communities throughout the Orlando metro area, helping seniors stay independent longer. If you live in Orlando, Seminole County, Winter Park, Apopka, or surrounding areas, there’s likely a senior in your neighborhood who would benefit from your companionship.

AmeriCorps Seniors Volunteers Grantees recruit individuals for this program who are 55 years and older Volunteers for this program serve as friends and companions to older neighbors, making sure they can live in their own homes for as long as possible. Volunteers are eligible to receive a stipend for their volunteering if they meet income eligibility requirements.

The Senior Companion program focuses on providing assistance and friendship to older adults who have difficulty with daily living tasks, such as shopping or paying bills.

Through this program, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers keep seniors independent longer and provide respite to family caregivers. AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers themselves report better health and longevity having served their community. You’ll forge new relationships with people in your community and make a significant difference in the lives of others.

AmeriCorps Seniors service also provides tangible benefits for volunteers. The Senior Companions program offers modest stipends to eligible volunteers to help offset the costs of volunteering. Other benefits include training and insurance.

Senior Companions help seniors remain independent in their own homes longer and provide essential respite for family caregivers across Orange and Seminole counties. How old do you have to be to volunteer with the Senior Companion Program? Volunteers must be 55 years of age or older.

There is no upper age limit. Many of our most dedicated Senior Companions are in their 70s and 80s and still actively serving older adults in their communities. Do Senior Companion volunteers receive a stipend?

Yes. Senior Companion volunteers must meet income eligibility requirements to participate in the program and receive the tax-free hourly stipend. Additional benefits include transportation assistance, accident and liability insurance, and training throughout the year.

What do Senior Companion volunteers do? Senior Companions provide friendly visits and conversation, assist with light tasks such as grocery shopping or paying bills, offer transportation to medical appointments, and serve as a consistent, caring presence for isolated older adults. Their work helps seniors maintain dignity and independence while significantly reducing feelings of loneliness.

How many hours do Senior Companions serve each week? Senior Companion volunteers typically serve around 20 hours per week. Your VCI coordinator will work with you to match you with clients near your home and build a schedule that works for both you and the seniors you support.

How is the Senior Companion Program different from the Foster Grandparent Program? Both are AmeriCorps Seniors programs run by VCI, but they serve different populations. The Senior Companion Program focuses on homebound older adults who need companionship and help maintaining independence at home.

The Foster Grandparent Program connects volunteers with children in schools and youth organizations who benefit from mentoring and one-on-one support.
