The SGEA supports and encourages scholarship in medical education, promotes collaborative projects across institutions and sections (UME, GME, CME, and MESRE), and works to develop a community of educational scholars.

Grants for Medical Educators Through its grants, the Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) seeks to encourage and support research and innovation that address important problems, answer timely questions, and drive the practice of medical education forward.

These grants aim to advance the work of all those engaged in improving academic medicine. This page includes information about current and reoccurring calls for funding proposals. It will be updated throughout the year with links to calls for grant applications as they open.

Northeast Group on Educational Affairs (NEGEA) Grants Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA) Grants Central Group on Educational Affairs (CGEA) Grants Western Group on Educational Affairs (WGEA) Grants National Grant Award Call for Educational Research Grant Proposals The GEA seeks to fund research projects that address important problems or questions in medical education.

High-quality research proposals on the following topics are strongly encouraged, but proposals in other areas are also welcome: professional identify formation; learner well-being and mistreatment; learning environment; faculty development; interprofessional education; competency-based medical education, entrustable professional activities, and milestones; self-directed/self-regulated learning; and virtual learning and COVID-related educational changes.

The GEA may fund multiple projects each year up to $10,000 each. This is a two-year grant. The pre-proposal application process opens in the fall, and the full proposal application process opens in the spring.

This call is currently closed. Medical Education Scholarship Research and Evaluation (MESRE) Mini-Grant The NEGEA provides funding to initiate new MESRE projects and to stimulate the development of a community of educational scholars. Projects promoting collaboration across institutions and sections (UME, GME, CPD) are encouraged.

The NEGEA may award multiple grants up to $3,500 for single-institution submissions and $7,500 for multi-institution submissions each cycle. This is a two-year award. This call is currently closed.

55 Hetty Cunningham, MD, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Building the Capacity of Healthcare Professionals Toward Anti-Racist and Inclusive Interprofessional Care , Funding awarded: $3,500 The NEGEA provides funding for early- and mid-career faculty to complete an educational scholarship or research project.

This grant provides an individual the opportunity for professional development through the design, implementation, and completion of a high-quality educational scholarship project (including curriculum development, educational program, or educational research). The NEGEA may award up to two individuals up to $15,000 each cycle. This is a two-year award.

The SGEA seeks proposals for new MESRE projects and will provide up to two research grants. This is a two-year award. The grant award may total up to $7,500 for submissions involving one institution and up to $10,000 for submissions involving the collaboration of two or more institutions.

Proposals must be consistent with previously published criteria for scholarship and provide additional opportunities for others to build on this work. The deadline for submissions is August 15 at 11:59 pm EST.

To recognize members who have developed an innovative approach to medical education and to support participation of SGEA members in activities that promote educational scholarship, the SGEA will provide one award of $5,000 each year to recognize an outstanding innovation in medical education.

Innovations which promote collaborative projects across institutions, the health professions, and sections (UME, GME, CPD, MESRE) will be given extra consideration. The deadline for submissions is August 15 at 11:59 pm EST.

complete submission instructions Spark Grants for Innovations in Medical Education The SGEA provides seed funding for innovative projects that enhance medical education and aim to help investigators overcome barriers to conducting or starting research.

This funding is intended to support the rapid implementation of an innovation, teaching activity, or novel assessment method aimed at improving teaching, learning, or assessment at any point along the medical education continuum. Applicants may request up to $1,000 toward their project. The SGEA may fund five to ten projects each cycle.

The CGEA now offers $10,000 for multiple-institution projects and $7,000 for single-institution projects. The CGEA welcomes proposals for any systematic scholarship project, including scholarship of discovery (i.e., traditional research that discovers new knowledge) as well as projects with systematic approaches to the scholarship of teaching, application, integration, and/or engagement (e.g., scholarly innovations).

Consistent with the requirements of scholarship, all funded projects must be collaborative and investigatory in nature, and their results must be made public, available for peer review, and freely available for others to build upon. The deadline for submissions is August 15, at 11:59 pm CT.
