Sloan's Technology program runs an exploratory grantmaking line that funds two AI areas most other funders treat separately. The first is human-AI interaction: multidisciplinary research on how people and AI systems actually interact, plus prototyping that moves those insights into practice - a rare case of a research funder explicitly paying for prototypes rather than only papers.
The second is AI in science and research automation, covering foundation models for science in chemistry, biology, materials and physics, AI lab automation and self-driving laboratories, AI-driven literature review and synthesis tools, machine learning for experimental design, scientific reasoning and hypothesis generation in LLMs, and infrastructure for open scientific AI. Grants typically run USD 100,000 to USD 400,000.
The process is the differentiator and the reason this line is underused: there is no fixed deadline and no application portal. Applicants email a letter of inquiry of no more than two pages to technology@sloan. org, reviewed on a rolling basis, and only invited applicants proceed to a full proposal.
That lowers the cost of a first approach to almost nothing compared with a federal solicitation, and it means the two-page LOI is the entire competition for most applicants - the framing of the question in those two pages carries far more weight than budget detail or preliminary data. Note this line is distinct from Sloan's separate Metascience and AI Postdoctoral Fellowship, which has its own RFP and its own deadlines.
