Small Business Innovation Research Program is a grant from the U.S. Department of the Navy that funds small businesses developing innovative technologies to address naval science and technology needs. The program covers more than 30 science and technology areas relevant to Navy and Marine Corps operations, providing the fleet with innovative technology advances developed by small firms. Phase I awards are up to $250,000.
The Navy also operates an STTR program that fosters joint efforts between small businesses and research institutions to develop technologies for transition to Navy and Marine Corps use. Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)/Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Through the Department of the Navy's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program, U.S. owned and operated small businesses of 500 people or less have the opportunity to address naval needs in more than 30 science and technology areas. SBIR provides the fleet with innovative advances in technology developed by small firms.
SBIR participants benefit both from program awards as well as the further development and commercialization of the resulting products. In addition, the Navy Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program is intended to foster transitions of joint efforts between qualified small businesses and research institutions to Navy and Marine Corps, in particular.
