These grants, awarded on a rolling basis throughout the academic year, support arts and creative practice projects in any medium that are directed by faculty at the University of Notre Dame. Grants are open to all regular faculty at the University of Notre Dame, regardless of department or rank. Awards made outside the College of Arts and Letters will be fully funded by the ND Arts Initiative.

Awards made within the College of Arts and Letters will be co-sponsored by the ND Arts Initiative and the Franco Institute. Faculty are limited to one Small Creative and Performing Arts Grant or Small Research Grant per academic year . Applications must be received at least one month prior to the start of the proposed research or creative work.

These grants may not be used to cover: Domestic or international conference expenses (see our International Conference Travel Grant or Large Henkels Grants ) Funds to upgrade Campus Workstation Program (CWP) computers Salary for course buyout or summer salary for faculty Publication costs such as indexing, editing, or subventions (see Franco Institute’s Publication Grants ) Promotional or public relations costs associated with campaigns for awards The development of textbooks or teaching materials.

The Franco Institute and the Arts Initiative welcome projects that involve students in research and creative practice.

Small Creative and Performing Arts Grants may be used to cover costs such as: Honoraria and payments to collaborators, research assistants, and human subjects Exhibition, festival, residency or competition entry fees Travel expenses for Arts & Letters faculty to participate in formal artist residencies or to create, exhibit, or perform work Travel expenses to Notre Dame for external collaborators Performance or exhibition expenses, including space rentals The rental or purchase of crucial equipment not currently accessible on campus.

All equipment purchased through this grant with a useful life of more than one year remains property of the University of Notre Dame and must be returned to the department at the end of the grant period.

Recording and production costs Shipping costs for artwork Image purchase and reproduction fees for publication Promotional materials to publicize an exhibition, lecture, or performance The intellectual and artistic merit of the work proposed The likely impact of the project for scholars, practitioners, and/or the general public The qualifications and track record of the applicant The overall likelihood that project will be successful Application Instructions: Researchers must apply for their own grants.

Applications submitted on behalf of a faculty member by a student, staff member, or outside entity will not be reviewed. While researchers may use multiple Franco Institute or Arts Initiative grants to cover various phases of a long-term research project, applicants should not submit the same (or very similar) proposals or budgets to multiple grant programs.

Required application materials: An application form through Submittable A proposal of no more than 1500 words describing: the significance of the project and its intended audience a rationale for the chosen materials, methods, and activities a detailed work plan that includes key activities and outputs (and evaluation processes and promotion/communication activities, if relevant) information about collaborators, if any An itemized budget ( must use the Institute's budget template ).
