Small project grants - NICAS The many cultural heritage collections in the Netherlands form an inexhaustible source of interesting research questions and conservation challenges. By tackling these, we can gain a better understanding of the material biography of heritage objects and use that knowledge to enrich the stories we tell about them and safeguard their future.
In order to unlock this research potential of and to stimulate research in and with Dutch heritage collections, NICAS offers a permanent funding scheme to support small projects in which museums and other heritage collections collaborate with academic partners. The annual budget for this funding programme will be at least €50. 000, but will be augmented from other sources whenever possible.
Applicants can submit proposals all year, with decisions on funding being made twice a year. The decision on the next round of grants will be made in April/May 2026, which means that all proposals that are submitted before 16 March 2026 will be reviewed for this round. The round after that will have a deadline of 21 September 2026 , with a decision in October/November 2026.
The proposal template, the official guidelines for the application and the terms and conditions, as well as the template that is used by reviewers to assess the proposal, can be found below. Proposals can be submitted in either Dutch or English. Funding can be requested by a Dutch higher education institutions (i.e. universities), knowledge institutions (RCE and RKD) or heritage institution (i.e. museums).
This means that international institutions cannot act as main applicants or co-applicants. However, international collaboration is possible in the following ways: The international partner provides in-kind research time, analytical services or access to collections. Project funds can be used to facilitate the collaboration (i.e. travel costs).
The international partner provides paid analytical services, with the condition that these services are not available in the Netherlands. The international partners provides funding for their part of the research, and uses the Small project Grant as a multiplier to expand the project with a Dutch component.
