UNEP’s Special Programme Provides a Funding Opportunity for Chemicals and Waste Management Projects in SIDS | GEF Islands Federated States of Micronesia Information Communication and Technology Donor governments and related donors’ projects Informal and underrepresented citizens and group UNEP’s Special Programme Provides a Funding Opportunity for Chemicals and Waste Management Projects in SIDS The UNEP Special Programme is a key avenue for support to developing countries, including SIDS, to manage chemicals and hazardous waste.
The current (and seventh round) of funding for project proposals opened on 6 April and closes on 11 August 2023. Governments of developing countries and countries with economies in transition, with a special focus on least developed countries and small island developing states, are eligible for support from the special programme. To date, ten of the 33 ISLANDS SIDS have applied for funds under the Special Programme Trust Fund.
The following ISLANDS SIDS are still eligible to apply: Atlantic region: Cabo Verde and Guinea-Bissau. Caribbean region: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Guyana, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago Indian Ocean region: Comoros, Mauritius, and Seychelles. Pacific region: Cook Islands, Fiji, Marshall Islands, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Tuvalu.
The Special Programme provides between US$50,000 – US$250,000 per approved project in order to strengthen institutional capacity for sound chemicals and waste management, through the development and implementation of policies, legislation and regulations. To qualify, a Special Programme-funded project must be country-driven with a plan to ensure long-term sound and sustainable management of chemicals and waste.
It should facilitate and enable the implementation of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, the Minamata convention and SAICM. Ideally, it should build upon previous and ongoing initiatives, engaging relevant government ministries, the private sector and NGOs, and ensure strong gender mainstreaming.
The Special Programme Secretariat will hold in-person clinics during the BRS COPs in Geneva from 3-5 May 2023 to support countries with developing project proposals. Webinars on 23 and 24 May will also provide assistance to applicants.
