C.

, to award $75,000 in grants to nine journalism organizations and SPJ chapters across the country. The grants support projects that advance First Amendment awareness, media literacy, access to public information and advocacy for journalists and their communities. This year’s cycle drew 54 applications totaling more than $1 million in requests.

The Foundation, with $75,000 allocated for grants, was able to fund roughly 7% of proposals submitted. “Every project the SPJ Foundation funded this year reflects SPJ’s mission to defend press freedom and empower journalists and the public alike,” said SPJ Foundation President Hagit Limor. “We’re inspired by the creativity, collaboration and commitment to truth we saw across all 54 proposals.

” The Grants Committee was pleased with the number and range of excellent applications it received this cycle, said Committee Chair Jane Kirtley. “Many were from groups that have not approached us previously.

All applications were judged on their merits, and the committee is confident that these grantees will carry out our priorities of promoting the First Amendment and press freedom, advocacy, media literacy and access to critical information,” Kirtley said. – $16,129 Navigating the Federal Government Training and tools to help journalists report on federal operations and policies through accessible data and expert insight. SPJ Greater Oregon Pro Chapter – $9,500 Sustainable Small-Chapter Advocacy Toolkit A marketing and crowdfunding model to support advocacy work by small chapters, designed for replication nationwide.

SPJ Los Angeles Pro Chapter – $9,000 Press Freedom: Coming Together, Fighting Back A daylong press freedom workshop and accompanying playbook outlining actionable steps for journalists and chapters nationwide. National Press Club Journalism Institute (Washington, D. C.)

– $8,000 A media literacy program and toolkit helping the public safely and effectively engage with journalists and strengthen trust in news. SPJ Georgia Pro Chapter – $5,000 A media literacy campaign offering training for journalists, students and community groups on press freedom and ethical reporting.

SPJ New England Pro Chapter – $5,000 National FOIA Contest for Students A national competition challenging students to use public records laws, documenting their successes and barriers. Cathy Kuhlmeier Foundation (Missouri) – $1,871 Freedom Fighters Assemble A podcast series sharing firsthand stories from students fighting for free press and expression rights in schools. SPJ St.

Louis Pro Chapter – $500 Student Journalist Boot Camp A one-day, hands-on training event for college journalists covering interviewing, ethics, records and reporting skills. In addition, the Foundation approved extensions for two previously funded projects: College Media Association (CMA) – to extend its Student Press Freedom Day initiatives.

The Foundation noted a strong increase in applications and diversity of proposals, crediting its new “How to Apply for a Grant” webinar for attracting new applicants. “These projects will strengthen local journalism, increase access to information and empower communities,” Limor said. “We’re proud to invest in that work and in the journalists leading it.
