State Fire Assistance (SFA) Grant Program

State Fire Assistance (SFA) Grant Program is sponsored by Nevada Division of Forestry (administered through US Forest Service). The SFA grant program provides funding to reduce risk and moderate the threat of catastrophic fire, especially in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas.

State Fire Assistance Program The Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) is responsible, in conjunction with a variety of federal, state and local cooperators, for developing and maintaining efficient and effective fire protection services through the Cooperative Fire Program of the State of Nevada. For the past several years, the National Fire Plan and the US Forest Service have made it possible for states to develop SFA grant programs.

The intent of the SFA grant program is to provide funding to reduce risk and moderate the threat of catastrophic fire, especially in Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas.

The four areas of emphasis are to: Improve prevention/education in the interface Restore fire-adapted ecosystems Promote community assistance/planning The State Fire Assistance grant program provides funding for fuel projects in each of Nevada’s seventeen counties. Funding is used to assess, plan and implement fuel treatment projects using a combination of hand crews, mechanical thinning, chipping, mulching, and seeding.

Grant funded projects reduce the threat of catastrophic fire by developing green strips, creating defensible space and improving forest health. NDF solicits pre-proposals each year and then selects those grants that will effectively compete with other states for federal grant funds.

NDF will assist those with proposals selected to compete by helping the cooperators develop a full proposal that will be submitted by NDF to the federal competitive grant evaluation committee. If applications compete well with those from other states and federal funds are allocated, then NDF will receive the funds and either sub-grant them to the applicants or administer them in-house.

NDF, in cooperation with our Federal and Local cooperators and partners, fully supports the National Cohesive Strategy.

The National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy is a strategic push to work collaboratively among all stakeholders and across all landscapes, using best science, to make meaningful progress towards the three goals: Safe & Effective Wildfire Response Natural Resource Management Fire Adapted Nevada Partnership The Division of Forestry provides natural resource and wildland fire management services to Nevada citizens and visitors to enhance, conserve and protect forest, rangeland and watershed values, endangered plants and other native flora.

1001 Galena Creek Regional park The Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) is teaming up with Washoe County Parks and Open Space, the USDA Forest Service, and the Nevada Department of Transportation on a new project at Galena Creek Regional Park.
