SOS enhances understanding of suicide prevention and opioid addiction among service members, veterans, and their families (SMVF) to build and improve community capacity and services. The Virginia’s Identify Service Members, Veterans and Families, Screen for Suicide Risk, and Refer (VISR) initiative provides training and technical assistance for community services providers in military and veteran culture and resources, suicide prevention, and lethal means safety.
Virginia's Identify Service Members, Veterans and Families, Screen for Suicide Risk and Refer (VISR) ## V irginia’s I dentify Service Members, Veterans, and Families, S creen for Suicide Risk, and R efer (VISR) Overview and Certification The goal of VISR is to enhance suicide prevention, risk screening, and safety planning for Service Members, Veterans, and Families (SMVF) through collaborative partnerships with community agencies.
Through the initiative, staff/stakeholders receive training and resources in military culture, suicide risk screening, lethal means safety, and safety planning. VISR also aims to track the number of SMVF screened and connected to services.

Suicide Mortality Review (SMR) **Suicide Mortality Review**(SMR) is a multidisciplinary process to help us better understand why people in our community die by suicide and to help us identify how we can prevent these deaths. It involves a collaboration of agencies involved in the safety, health, and protection of Virginia.
## SOS Grant Opportunities The purpose of the SOS Grants is to solicit applications to establish awards for the provision of comprehensive suicide prevention and opioid addiction services for service members, veterans, and their families (SMVF) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Virginia Department of Veterans Services (DVS) was directed to collaborate with federal, state, local and community organizations, public and private institutions, and other service providers to develop programs to prevent suicide among service members and address opioid addiction suffered by service members and veterans.
Grant funds should be used to promote the use of evidence-based practices such as peer support, crisis intervention, behavioral health focused prevention, treatment, and recovery support. To learn more about current SOS grant opportunities, visit**https://grants. dvs.
