The grant portal functions best in Chrome, Safari or Firefox internet browsers. ## Application & Timeline Once your registration is approved, you will have the opportunity to choose from four application formats: capital project, program grant, and annual fund. Please choose the application that best suits your request and submit your request.

If you are requesting support for an event, please use the annual fund application. The foundation does not fund individuals. Funding decisions for Summer Lea Hillman Foundation will be made during two cycles (June and November) each calendar year.

### What types of grants does the Foundation make? Can you tell me if my project or organization is an area on which the Foundation is focusing? The Summer Lea Hillman Foundation focuses its investment in the Portland, Ore.

metro region in the following areas: * Animal health and safety * Foster care and adoption * Child and youth development and advocacy * Environmental conservation, sustainability, and education We ask that your project or idea fit into one of these areas. Project proposals outside of these areas are by invitation only. What is the typical grant size?

Using the grant search tool, previous years’ grants can be searched and viewed to provide a sense of grant size. Applicants are encouraged to set request amounts based on actual need and in consideration of the Foundation’s grant amounts for similar projects in previous years. Does the Foundation make multi-year grants?

The Foundation does consider a limited number of multi-year grants. Does the Foundation fund individuals? Scholarships?

Fundraising events? The Foundation is not permitted to fund individuals, but will consider a limited number of scholarships and fundraising events. I see that the Foundation is part of Hillman Family Foundations (HFF).

Should I apply to the other HFF foundations, too? Summer Lea Hillman Foundation is one of 18 foundations administered byHillman Family Foundations(HFF). Each of these foundations has its own specific funding priorities and geographic focus.

To better serve you and be mindful of your time and effort, we strongly encourage you to review each foundation's priorities and geographic focus and**only apply to the****one HFF foundation**that best fits your proposal and geographic location, per year. Submitting an application to more than one foundation under the HFF administrative umbrella in a year may result in an automatic decline of your proposal.

Once you and your organization are registered and you have a username and password, you are welcome to complete the online application. Please review thegrant processsection of the website. Should I share my project and/or idea before applying?

Applicant organizations are best able to weigh their mission and funding ideas against the foundation’s priorities as presented on the homepage. If you still have questions about alignment, you are welcome to reach out to the program director. However, submitting an application is the preferred means of learning about funding needs and ideas.

### Contacting the Foundation Can we set up a meeting to run several ideas by you? Unfortunately, with limited staff capacity and the volume of requests received, it is difficult for the staff to make time for exploratory conversations although they are often invited based on the review of requests submitted. It is very difficult to read the volume of newsletters and annual reports that the Foundation receives. Program staff try to stay current, but it's more likely that these types of materials are reviewed when a request is submitted for consideration. Who is the best point of contact for participating in a feasibility study for a capital campaign?

The Foundation generally does not participate in feasibility studies for capital campaigns. The information on our organization’s profile is no longer correct (i.e. staffing changes, new address, annual budget growth). How do we update it?

There was a delay in implementing my project. How do I request a no-cost extension and/or an extension on the final report? Our organization has a new Executive Director, Director of Development, or other staffing change.

How do we add the new staff member to the grant portal? The new staff member should go to the online grant portal (Fluxx) and select the button “Create an account now. ” Alternately, your organization’s current point of contact can send an email to Alexandra Jones atAMJones@hillmanfo.
