Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership in Alberta | Alberta. ca Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership Veterinary Student Recruitment and Retention Pilot Program To support continued innovation, growth and prosperity, the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) has launched its programs. This 5‐year (2023-2028), $3.

5 billion investment includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities and $2. 5 billion in cost-shared programs and activities by federal-provincial-territorial governments. The Sustainable CAP framework represents a cost-shared federal-provincial investment of $508 million over 5 years towards strategic programs and services for the agriculture and agri-food industry in Alberta.

Under Sustainable CAP, business risk management programs will continue to help producers manage significant risks that threaten the viability of their farm and are beyond their capacity to manage. Sustainable CAP programming launched in April 2023. Alberta producers, farmers, ranchers, processors and organizations can apply for these cost-shared grant programs.

Processors, organizations Supports projects focused on innovation and result in significant company growth and sector impact. Greenhouse Growers, Vertical Farms Supports growth of the controlled environment agriculture sector by providing funding to projects that increase Albertan’s access to locally grown food such as fruits and vegetables year-round.

Producers, farmers, ranchers Supports producers in achieving environmental benefits by improving the efficient use of agricultural inputs. Producers, farmers, ranchers Helps primary producers grow sales, expand production capacity, explore market opportunities and create jobs in Alberta. Resiliency and Public Trust Enables stakeholders to gain resiliency and build public trust in Alberta’s agriculture and agri-food sectors.

Resilient Agricultural Landscape Producers, farmers, ranchers Supports producers to conserve and enhance the environmental resiliency of their agricultural landscapes. Invests in projects that increase company sales and production capacity, expand market opportunities, and create jobs in Alberta.

Veterinary Student Recruitment and Retention Pilot Supports hiring and training veterinary students, encouraging future placements and building pathways to full time roles in rural veterinary clinics. Producers, farmers, ranchers Helps producers adopt agricultural water management practices for continued growth and long-term success of the agriculture industry.

Accelerating Agricultural Innovations Funding is provided to Results Driven Agricultural Research (RDAR) to deliver programs. Business Risk Management Programs Producers, farmers, ranchers Agriculture Financial Services Corporation provides Alberta farmers with crop insurance, livestock price insurance, farm loans, commercial loans and farm income disaster assistance.

March 11, 2026: A ‘new’ Veterinary Student Recruitment and Retention Pilot program has launched The two-year, $250,000 Veterinary Student Recruitment and Retention pilot program, is aimed at enticing rural practices to hire summer veterinary students and encouraging students to continue their careers in those communities, learn more .

December 10, 2025: A ‘new’ Growing Greenhouses program has launched The three-year, $10-milllion Growing Greenhouses program aims to stimulate industry growth and provide fresh fruit and vegetables to Albertans throughout the year. Learn more .

August 14, 2024: On-farm Efficiency Program launches Input from the Sustainable CAP stakeholder engagement has helped inform program adjustments that enable the framework to best serve Alberta’s agriculture sector.

The On-Farm Efficiency Program (formerly the Efficient Grain Handling and Farm Technology programs) will allow for the continuation of the successful aspects of both programs, while also supporting new opportunities that encourage enhanced on-farm efficiency.

April 11, 2024: Year 2 Sustainable CAP adjustments Input from the Sustainable CAP stakeholder engagement in fall 2023 has helped inform program adjustments that will enable the framework to best serve Alberta’s agriculture sector. Most of the feedback and suggested changes relate to continuous improvement to the existing program suite, as no significant concerns were identified.

As of April 2024, program updates include: adjusted grant maximums and cost shares for the Water Program to offset rising project costs. In both the Irrigation and On-Farm Water Streams, this change should incentivize producers to participate in programming. On-Farm Value-Added and Value-Added program updates to better align with the industry need for quicker response times and clearer application outcomes.

April 10, 2024: Sustainable CAP – Phase 3 What We Heard report released In fall 2023, representatives from a range of agriculture stakeholder groups were asked to share their feedback on the Sustainable CAP program suite. Suggested changes will be reviewed to identify gaps and opportunities for improvements.

October 4, 2022: NPF What we Heard Report released Engagement with Alberta’s agriculture industry stakeholders was held to support the minister and other Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development (AFRED) officials in developing and negotiating the Next Policy Framework (NPF). Sessions were held with Alberta agriculture organizations and associations, and post-secondary institutions.

Industry representative feedback was also received via email. An online survey was open from May 9 to June 6, 2022. Engagement gauged understanding of the 5 priority areas identified in the Guelph Statement and focused on the following questions: What are your initial reactions to the Guelph Statement?

What is most important for Alberta’s agriculture, agri-food, and agri-processing industry? Is there anything missing? Are there any gaps?
