We use the LOI stage to assess suitability and novelty. The foundation recommends submitting an LOI if applicants believe their research meets the criteria outlined in the RFA. A review of the LOI may lead to a request for a full proposal.
Full proposals must be submitted via SAM by the main PI and respective institution. The full proposal deadline will be noted in the LOI notification and will be no sooner than three months from the date of the LOI approval. Applicants will be notified of a decision within three months of the full proposal submission.

Important: In order for known project personnel to display in the Personnel column drop-down list, you must add them as Project Personnel in the Contacts & Personnel tab of the application as well as add an application role to each personnel using the “Add More Details” button. You will need to close and reopen the budget for the changes to populate. Do not select TBD in the Personnel drop-down list if the personnel is known.
They must be first entered in the Project Personnel section as outlined above. Do not combine personnel on one budget line (e. g.
multiple postdocs must be itemized individually). Provide justification for each budget line item entered, including all Personnel Costs requested. Please note that the budget justification should be detailed and appropriate for the funds being requested.
An insufficient budget justification will result in the proposal not being considered further . Within each budget period, you have the ability to copy the budget and justification from the previous period and then make edits as needed. Publications & Other Support Tab: Please provide other support as indicated. Publications: Provide a list of up to 10 relevant publications for each PI and co-I via PDF upload or SAM profiles.
Please name each PDF as Last Name_First Name_Publications. Other Support: Please follow instructions for providing current and pending support for each PI and co-I via PDF upload or via SAM profiles. If providing via SAM profile, reporting overlap is required to submit an application.
While overlap is not a consideration for funding in this program, please click on the Report Overlap button for each entry and select Yes or No as appropriate. If using PDF upload, NSF or other format is sufficient and should at least provide the award number, source of funding, title of award, dates of project and total costs for each support item listed. Please name each PDF as Last Name_First Name_Support .
Check Application Progress: Click the Check Application Progress button to check for any missing required information or files. All missing required information will be listed at the top of the screen and must be corrected before the application can be submitted. Send for Sign-off & Submit: When the application is complete, please click on the ‘Send for sign-off’ button to send to your signing official for signature.
The Signing Official will receive a notification when the application is ready for sign-off. The Signing Official must provide an electronic signature in the Submission tab of the proposal. When the application is signed, the Signing Official must click on the Submit Signature button which will submit the application to the foundation.
A confirmation page will appear for the Signing Official once the application is successfully submitted, and the application will now appear in the Submitted tab of the Applications in Progress table. The applicant, Signing Official and Financial Officer will receive a notification when the application is signed and submitted. What types of projects are appropriate for consideration under this program? While there are no fixed guidelines, projects at the single- or few-PI scale that might be funded by federal agencies would not normally be considered under the Targeted Grants in MPS program. Would both theoretical and experimental projects be funded?
The emphasis of the program is theory, but projects with some experimental components may be considered. I am an adjunct faculty member at my institution. Am I eligible to apply to this program?
No, we do not accept applications from adjunct faculty. Are proposals in the chemistry field eligible? No, we are not considering proposals in chemistry at this time.
To whom is the grant awarded? The grant is awarded to the applicant’s institution. Is there a limit to the number of applications per PI or institution?
If I am not awarded a Targeted Grant in MPS, may I reapply? Yes, there is no limit on the number of times one can reapply. Note regarding potential referral of an application to The Simons Foundation International, Ltd.
