The Agentic AI Revolution and its Impact on the on the Planning, Assessment, Investment, and Accelerated Transition to the Field of Department of War's Materials Science & Technology Enterprise Consensus/Advisory Activity Consensus/Advisory Activity An activity carried out by an appropriately knowledgeable and balanced ad hoc committee, the purpose of which is to provide formal advice on the matters posed in the statement of task for the activity.
These activities follow institutional policies and procedures to adhere to Section 15 of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA).
See all consensus/advisory activities The Agentic AI Revolution and its Impact on the on the Planning, Assessment, Investment, and Accelerated Transition to the Field of Department of War's Materials Science & Technology Enterprise Space, Security, and Conflicts This study examines how agentic AI can transform the strategic management of science and technology enterprises while considering materials science research.
Focusing on the Department of War’s Manufacturing and Materials Science & Technology ecosystem, it explores how AI-enabled decision support, autonomous reasoning, and multi-agent systems can improve portfolio planning, investment prioritization, resource allocation, and technology transition.
The study assesses near-term AI capabilities, governance considerations, and partnership opportunities across government, academia, and industry to help shape a more agile, effective, and mission-aligned approach to materials innovation. A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine-appointed ad hoc committee will explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities will impact the lifecycle of the Department of War's Manufacturing & Materials Science & Technology (M&M S&T) mission, especially with respect to the planning, assessment, investment, and accelerated transition to the field.
Specifically, the committee will examine the following topics: • The impact of AI on S&T planning, prioritizing, and assessing processes; • The technological state-of-the-art, including the capabilities and limitations, of Augmented Intelligence and autonomous decision-making tools for S&T process applications; • Potential strategic partnerships between DoW and the technology sector, industry, academia, and other federal agencies conducting foundational AI and materials research.
• The role of existing AI-enabled S&T investments and capabilities across the broader federal research ecosystem (e.g., DOE, NSF, NIST), and how these may inform or be leveraged by the Department of War.
