The Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Fund is a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Omidyar Network, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and Jim Pallotta that funds organizations amplifying civil society's voice in shaping ethical, accountable AI development. Launched in January 2017 with $27 million in initial contributions, the fund committed $7.6 million in an initial grant round to nine organizations. Academic anchor institutions include Harvard's Berkman Klein Center and MIT Media Lab. The fund supports applied research, education, and policy work at the intersection of AI systems, public policy, law, and social science. Eligible organizations work on AI ethics, governance, and public accountability.
At CGI on September 23, 2026, Global Impact Ventures committed $100 million over three years across economic opportunity, health, education, climate resilience and humanitarian needs. There is no application portal. The access route is the intermediary infrastructure — fiscal sponsorship, grantmaking administration, and a 250-organization network.
