The TMS Foundation Scholarships is sponsored by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) Foundation. The TMS Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students studying minerals, metals, and materials science and engineering. These scholarships provide financial support and often include travel reimbursements to attend the TMS Annual Meeting.

TMS Scholarships - Material Advantage The TMS Foundation awards nearly $30,000 in scholarships annually to outstanding students studying minerals, metals, and materials science and engineering. These deserving students receive much-needed financial support that allows them to complete their undergraduate studies and to move on to advanced degrees.
TMS also provides travel reimbursements, up to $500, to assist with travel costs to attend the conference and personally accept the award. Henry DeWitt Smith Scholarship Funding By: AIME (American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers) Two scholarships of approximately $2,000 are available to graduate students majoring in the field of mineral, metals, and/or materials engineering.
An additional $500 for travel expenses is available to the recipient in order to personally accept the award at the TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition. Recipients will also receive a brochure about Mr. Smith and his relationship to the mining industry.
The principal aim and purpose of this scholarship fund is to further the mineral industries by affording educational opportunities in the arts and sciences pertaining to those industries, particularly by assisting worthy students in the mining, metallurgical and petroleum departments of leading colleges and universities which confer degrees in mineral engineering. The scholarship recipient is known as the Henry DeWitt Smith Scholar.
Scholarship recipients must travel to and attend the conference to receive the travel funds. Acta Materialia Inc. Undergraduate Scholarship Funding By: Acta Materialia Inc. Two $5,000 scholarships are available to undergraduate students majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or to undergraduate students with a significant interest in the materials area.
In addition, a travel stipend of $500 per award is available for the recipients to attend the TMS Annual Meeting to formally receive the scholarship. Scholarship recipients will receive a certificate and the scholarship funds. Awardees who attend the TMS Annual Meeting will also be provided with complimentary student registration for the meeting and a ticket to the TMS-AIME Awards Reception.
This scholarship is supported by the generosity of Acta Materialia, Inc. and issued under the TMS Foundation. Acta Materialia, Inc. Undergraduate Scholarships are being awarded by TMS and ASM. Material Advantage student members may only apply to this scholarship through one society each year.
Scholarship recipients must travel to and attend the conference to receive the travel funds.
Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division Scholarship Supported By: TMS Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division One $2,500 scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in their sophomore or junior years, who are majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on manufacturing from product design to production, integrating process control technology into manufacturing, and basic and applied research into key materials technologies that impact manufacturing processes.
Additionally, each recipient receives up to $500 for travel expenses to attend the meeting to accept the award. Recipients are known as MPMD Scholars. Scholarship recipients must travel to and attend the conference to receive the travel funds.
FMD Gilbert Chin Scholarship Supported By: TMS Functional Materials Division One $2,500 scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student in their sophomore or junior years studying subjects in relation to synthesis and processing, structure, properties, and performance of electronic, photonic, magnetic and superconducting materials as well as materials used in packaging and interconnecting such materials in device structures.
An additional $500 for travel expenses will be available to the recipient to attend the TMS Annual Meeting to accept the award. Scholarship recipients must travel to and attend the conference to receive the travel funds.
Extraction & Processing Division Scholarship Supported By: TMS Extraction & Processing Division Up to three $2,500 scholarships are available to full-time undergraduate applicants in their sophomore or junior years, who are majoring in metallurgy, materials science, engineering, or a related field with an emphasis on extraction, materials characterization, energy, recycling and sustainability, or process modeling.
Up to $500 for travel expenses to the TMS Annual Meeting to accept the award will be given to each recipient. Scholarship recipients must travel to and attend the conference to receive the travel funds.
International Symposium on Superalloys Scholarship Funding By: TMS Foundation and issued under the generosity of the TMS International Symposium on Superalloys Committee Two $2,000 scholarships, with up to $250 for each awardee in travel reimbursements, are available to current PhD students majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on all aspects of superalloys; enrolled in a program on classical topics related to superalloys processing/properties.
In addition to the traditional focus areas of alloy development, processing, mechanical behavior, coatings, and environmental effects, studies can also involve technologies that contribute to improving manufacturability, affordability, life prediction and performance of superalloys. Scholarship recipients must travel to and attend the conference to receive the travel funds.
Light Metals Division Scholarship Supported By: TMS Light Metals Division One $2,500 scholarship is available to undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on both traditional (aluminum, magnesium, beryllium, titanium, lithium, and other reactive metals) and emerging light metals (composites, laminates, etc.).
The LMD student scholarship recipients must present at the LMD luncheon or submit a video for presentation if not able to attend in-person. Scholarship recipients are known as LMD Scholars. Up to $500 for travel expenses to the TMS Annual Meeting to accept the award will be given to each recipient.

Structural Materials Division Scholarship Supported By: TMS Structural Materials Division One $2,500 scholarship is available to full-time undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years majoring in metallurgical and/or materials science and engineering with an emphasis on the science and engineering of load-bearing materials, including studies into the nature of a material’s physical properties based upon its microstructure and operating environment.
Additionally, the scholarship recipient will be given up to $500 for travel expenses to the TMS Annual Meeting to accept their award. Scholarship recipients must travel to and attend the conference to receive the travel funds.
Kaufman CALPHAD Scholarship Supported By: CALPHAD Inc and TMS Foundation One $1,000 scholarship is made available to a full-time undergraduate student in their sophomore or junior years majoring in metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, or minerals processing/extraction programs.
In addition, a travel stipend of $500 is available for the recipient to attend the TMS Annual Meeting, to formally receive the scholarship. The scholarship is established to recognize the memory of Dr. Larry Kaufman for his contributions to computational thermodynamics and its applications. Scholarship recipients must travel to and attend the conference to receive the travel funds.

Completed application form . An individual statement describing unique educational experiences (e.g., special projects), career plans, leadership experience, involvement in a Material Advantage chapter, and community involvement. This statement should be no more than 200 words and double-spaced.
An up-to-date transcript of your academic record. Three (3) recommendations from educators and/or employees who are familiar with your background. You may apply for up to two TMS sponsored scholarships per year, however, TMS will only award one scholarship per student per year.
