The Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP)

The Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP) is sponsored by Toyota USA Foundation. This program aims to increase basic language and literacy skills among Hispanic and other immigrant families by involving parents in their child's classroom.

NCFL: Toyota Literacy Partner Helps Families Turn a New Page Since 1991, Toyota has supported National Center Families Learning (NCFL) in its efforts build and sustain learning and literacy programs that benefit the whole family.

Serving its mission to break generational poverty, NCFL’s multi-generational education programs taking a proactive, holistic approach, meeting families where they are, engaging parents and children and bolstering family bonds. As a central piece of Toyota’s mission of Mobility for All, it aligns community engagement with the company’s core philosophy of Respect for People.

More than thirty years ago, with the support of Dr. Shoichiro Toyoda, former chair of Toyota Motor Corporation and the father of current TMC chair, Akio Toyoda, Toyota began supporting NCFL’s work to establish models for reading and language skill-building. These skills are foundational to creating the prepared workforce needed to meet the needs of a changing world. Forms of support for NCFL span funding and programming.

Toyota’s total donation to NCFL since 1991 is over $55 million, helping establish Toyota Literacy and Learning programs in more than 400 communities across America, impacting more than 4. 5 million parents and children.

Within the centers, a variety of programs support families, such as: Family Service Learning projects, Parent and Child Together (PACT) Time®, and family-to-family mentoring on safety and security, environmental stewardship, financial literacy, effective educational systems, transportation and health. And while direct contact with programs and facilitators is felt on the local level, Toyota Family learning programs offer a secondary, and perhaps ultimately more important benefit for communities impacted by generational poverty. Since 1991, NCFL has had an emphasis on evaluating the impact of its work.

Over time, data show that families participating in Toyota programming have higher school attendance rates compared to peers, experience gains in literacy and reading scores, increased family engagement in education, and increased social capital among other key indicators.
