The Womack Foundation approved $520,500 in grants to schools, nonprofits and community organizations during its annual meeting April 24, continuing the organization’s support of educational, charitable and youth-focused initiatives across Southern Virginia and North Carolina.

Foundation board members met at 3 p. m. with Amanda Oakes calling the meeting to order.

Those attending included Amanda Oakes, Jonathan Hollie, Kevin Gatewood, Charles Womack III and Bobbye Raye Womack. During the meeting, board members reviewed financial reports, follow-up reports and grant applications submitted for the 2026 funding cycle. The board unanimously approved grant awards after discussion of all submitted proposals.

Amanda Oakes abstained from discussion and voting involving the Regional Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention application, while Kevin Gatewood abstained from discussion and voting involving the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research application.

Among the largest grants approved were $30,000 awards to Danville-Pittsylvania County Habitat for Humanity for construction of a home on Martin Avenue and to the Stony Mill Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization for development of an outdoor classroom project.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area received $28,500 for mentoring initiatives, while the Chatham Band Parents Association was awarded $28,000 for drum line equipment and a field public-address system. Organizations receiving $20,000 grants included Community Improvement Council Inc., God’s Store House, Hope Center Ministries, the Stony Mill Elementary Beta Club and The Salvation Army.

Additional grants included $19,000 to Camp Selah Ministries, $15,000 to Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, $15,000 to Danville Speech and Hearing Center, $15,000 to EPIC Caswell Inc. and $15,000 to Hoop Don’t Shoot.

The foundation also approved $10,000 grants for Blue Ridge Mountains Council - Scouting America, Boys & Girls Club of the Danville Area, Danville Science Center, Danville Symphony Orchestra, Institute for Advanced Learning and Research and Southside Soccer Club. New officers for the upcoming year were unanimously approved by the board. Charles Womack III, grandson of the foundation’s founder, was elected chair.

Amanda Oakes was elected vice chair, and Kevin Gatewood was elected secretary-treasurer. Minutes indicate no new board members were presented for consideration and no old business was discussed. Under new business, the board said anticipated expenses for the 2026-27 year are expected to primarily involve services provided by Harris, Harvey, and Neal.

Board members also reviewed updates to the foundation’s website and encouraged future applicants to use the online application process. According to the minutes, award letters sent to grant recipients will include instructions directing organizations to submit future applications through the website. The next Womack Foundation meeting is scheduled for spring 2027.
