The Transforming Power Fund (TPF) is a Detroit-based social justice fund committed to transformative systems change. TPF grew out of a city-wide effort, initiated by Detroit’s social justice community, to bring more foundation resources to social justice movements and to demonstrate a more equitable approach to traditional philanthropy.
TPF provides funding, training, and other resources for local projects that address the root causes of systemic problems and advanced holistic solutions. TPF prioritizes community governance, donor organizing, and shared values in order to model a more equitable approach to philanthropy.
TPF embraces the shared values of inclusion, equity, justice (racial, economic, gender, disability, environmental), personal transformation, structural transformation, intergenerational relationships, cooperation, collaboration, continual learning, creativity, audacity, healing, and working across boundaries. The Transforming Power Fund is launching the Climate & Environmental Justice Grant.
This is a one year grant that will focus on climate change and environmental justice in Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck. TPF will provide one-time grants in the amount of $40,000 to five organizations seeking to build power to address climate change and environmental justice.
Organizations applying for this grant must seek to reduce legacy pollution to move the social justice needle in the City of Detroit, Highland Park and/or Hamtramck. These funds are unrestricted and may be used for operating costs, community organizing, cultural work, leadership training and development, movement building, or to advance the rights of persons with disabilities.
Organizations that apply for this funding must demonstrate their intent for community-driven solutions to the climate crisis that engage, empower, and benefit communities impacted by air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, food insecurity and energy justice.
Proposals must pursue one or more of the following objectives: * Raise awareness of the disproportionate impacts of climate change in directly impacted communities and the need for clean energy and energy efficiency. * Mobilize communities against the fossil fuel industry or petrochemical production and in support of emissions reduction. * Further community resilience to climate change, environmental injustices, and/or legacy pollution.
This can be achieved by building Climate Resilience Hubs within their local community and/or churches. * Address historical harms due to environmental racism caused by environmental and economic divestments in directly impacted communities. * Address issues of water and air quality, legacy pollution and seek to identify solutions to pollution reduction and for clean air and water.
* They will address the issues of food insecurity due to environmental harms and lack of transportation. In addition to communities being locked out of opportunities due to a lack of access to resources within their communities and other surrounding communities. * They will address the issue of health outcomes and harms created by pollution, climate and other environmental harms.
In addition, these same communities suffer from a lack of access to healthcare.
