DEPARTMENT OF WAR - CONGRESSIONALLY DIRECTED MEDICAL RESEARCH PROGRAMS Transforming Health Care through Innovative and Impactful Research Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Traumatic Brain Injury and Vision – Optimize the prevention, assessment, and treatment of psychological health conditions Mission – Fund research to understand, prevent and treat psychological health conditions and/or traumatic brain injuries that accelerates solutions to improve the health and healthcare of Service Members, their Families, Veterans, and the American public.
» Click on Image to View Program Summary Sheet In Fiscal Year 2007 (FY07), Congress appropriated funding for traumatic brain injury and psychological health research in response to the traumatic brain injuries sustained and psychological health issues experienced by our deployed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The current Peer-Reviewed Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Research Program (TBIPHRP) complements ongoing DOD efforts toward promoting a better standard of care for psychological health and traumatic brain injury in the areas of prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. To efficiently manage the TBIPHRP, CDMRP will utilize its two-tiered review process .
Resources Available for the Research Community The CDMRP intends that information, data, and research resources supported by the TBIPHRP be made available to the research community and the public at large.
Some examples are provided below: Data sharing repositories: Federal Interagency Research Repository and NIMH Data Archive Resources generated by the FY07-20 Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury Research Program (PH/TBIRP) funded investigators: FY07 - CDMRP managed the appropriations for psychological health (including PTSD) and traumatic brain injury as the Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury Research Program (PH/TBIRP).
FY08 - No PH/TBIRP funds were appropriated. FY09-20 - USAMRDC-based research program areas aligned with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs and the Defense Health Agency managed the PH/TBIRP appropriations. CDMRP provided program and award management support as requested during this time.
FY21 - CDMRP managing the appropriation as the Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health Research Program (TBIPHRP).
