The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released its forecast for anticipated grant opportunities scheduled for April and May 2026. These upcoming SAMHSA grant programs can provide organizations with the funding to expand programs, strengthen service capacity, build new partnerships, and increase access to critical services in high‑need communities.

Preventing Youth Overdose: Treatment, Recovery, Education, Awareness and Training Purpose: The purpose of this program is to improve local awareness among youth of risks associated with fentanyl, expand screening and diagnosis for opioid use disorder (OUD) among youth, increase access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) for youth, and train healthcare providers, families, and school personnel on best practices for supporting youth with OUD and those taking MOUD.

Forecasted Release Date: May 15, 2026 Total Program Funding: $2,700,000 Preventing Drug Overdoses: Community Prevention and Response Purpose: The purpose of this program is to develop and implement a community-wide prevention program of drug overdose deaths by expanding access to FDA-approved opioid overdose reversal medications.

Forecasted Release Date: May 15, 2026 Total Program Funding: $11,050,000 Grants to Expand Substance Use Disorder Treatment Capacity in Adult and Family Treatment Drug Courts Purpose: The purpose of this program is to expand substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery support services in existing drug courts.

Grant recipients will be required to implement a coordinated, multisystem approach that combines the legal authority of treatment drug courts with evidence-based SUD treatment services. Key stakeholders include the judiciary, prosecution, defense attorneys, probation services, law enforcement, mental health professionals, social service agencies, and treatment providers.

The objective is to disrupt the recurring pattern of criminal behavior, substance use, and incarceration or other legal consequences.

Forecasted Release Date: May 15, 2026 Total Program Funding: $7,600,000 Comprehensive Opioid Recovery Centers Purpose : The purpose of the program is to establish and implement comprehensive treatment and recovery centers that provide a full continuum of evidence-based treatment and recovery services to address the opioid epidemic, substance misuse, and substance use disorders, including alcohol use disorder.

Forecasted Release Date: May 15, 2026 Total Program Funding : $3,400,000 Center of Excellence for Protected Health Information Related to Behavioral Health Purpose: The purpose of this program is to implement a National Center of Excellence to develop and disseminate training, technical assistance, and educational resources for healthcare practitioners, families, individuals, states, and communities on federal privacy statutes and regulations as they relate to behavioral health data.

Forecasted Release Date: May 15, 2026 Total Program Funding: $1,000,000 Treatment and Recovery Services for Youth, Young Adults, and Families Purpose: The purpose of this program is to enhance comprehensive treatment and recovery services for youth (ages 12-17) and young adults (ages 18-25) with substance use disorders and/or co-occurring substance use and mental disorders and their families/primary caregivers.

Forecasted Release Date: May 15, 2026 Total Program Funding: $6,540,000 Statewide Consumer Network Purpose: The purpose of this program is to strengthen the capacity and sustainability of statewide mental health peer-run organizations.

Forecasted Release Date: May 15, 2026 Total Program Funding: $1,849,735 Services Program for Residential Treatment for Pregnant and Postpartum Women Purpose: The purpose of this program is to provide comprehensive services for pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorders across the continuum of residential settings that support treatment and sustain recovery.

Treatment and recovery support services should be provided to pregnant and postpartum women and their dependent children who may reside with the women while in treatment.

Forecasted Release Date: May 15, 2026 Total Program Funding: $5,250,000 Additional SAMHSA grant programs forecasted for release include: Cooperative Agreements for Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) Planning Grants This program aims to help states develop the policies and infrastructure needed to participate in the CCBHC Demonstration Program.

National Strategy for Suicide Prevention This program strengthens statewide and tribal suicide prevention systems by supporting coordinated, evidence-based prevention efforts. Community Programs for Youth and Young Adults at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis This program expands state and tribal early intervention systems that identify and support youth at high risk for psychosis.

Behavioral Health Mobile Crisis Team Partnership This program aims to help states and tribal organizations establish new and enhance existing mobile crisis teams that serve children, youth, and adults experiencing mental health or substance use crises.

Providers Clinical Support System – Universities This program expands university-based training models to strengthen the behavioral health workforce’s ability to address substance use disorders. Garrett Lee Smith Campus Suicide Prevention This program improves suicide prevention capacity on college campuses through training, awareness, crisis response, and student support systems.

Additional Forecasted SAMHSA Grant Opportunities: Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education) Purpose: To build a sustainable infrastructure for school-based mental health services by fostering strong collaborative partnerships among education agencies, mental health agencies, community providers, school personnel, families, and school-aged youth.

Forecasted Release: April 1, 2026 Total Program Funding: $56,170,333 National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCTSI-Cat 2) – Treatment and Service Adaptation Purpose: To support the adaptation, expansion, and refinement of trauma-informed practices to improve service quality and accessibility for children and families impacted by trauma.

Forecasted Release: April 1, 2026 Total Program Funding: $14,400,000 MHAT Health Training Awareness Purpose: The purpose of this program is to facilitate the implementation of mental health awareness and literacy training.
