Tribal Education Department Grant Program | Bureau of Indian Education Tribal Education Department Grant Program The Tribal Education Department (TED) grants are competitive grants given to tribes for the development and operation of TEDs for the purpose of planning and coordinating all educational programs of the tribe.
These funds support the development of TEDs to improve educational outcomes for students and improve efficiencies and effectiveness in the operation of BIE-funded schools. The goal of the TED grant program is to promote tribal education capacity building by focusing on certain areas.
These areas include providing for the development and enforcement of tribal educational codes, facilitating tribal control in all matters related to the education of Indian children on reservations, and providing for the development of coordinated educational programs on reservations.
At the same time that TEDs provide technical assistance to all relevant Bureau-funded schools, the BIE also provides technical assistance to TEDs to help them improve their planning and strengthen their school processes. In order to qualify to apply for these grants, tribes have to have a Bureau-funded school on or near their reservation.
Tribes then submit proposals to apply for these grants, which include a project narrative wherein projects under the grant application are identified, a budget narrative, and a work plan outline. After a comprehensive evaluation process, the most qualified tribes are ultimately selected to receive the grants.
After a tribe receives a TED grant, continuous monitoring of the TED takes place to ensure that funds are being used appropriately and effectively. A project coordinator from each TED must participate in monthly collaboration and update meetings, submit quarterly budget updates, submit an annual report at the end of each project year, and ultimately ensure that the TED fulfills the obligations of the grant.
