The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Discretionary Grant program, administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), provided discretionary funding for investments in road, rail, transit and port projects. Since 2009, TIGER has provided nearly $4. 6 billion to 381 projects in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, including 134 projects to support rural and tribal communities.
For FY 2016, $500 million was made available for transportation projects across the country under an eighth round of TIGER. In 2018, the TIGER program was renamed the **Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program**. TIGER grants have been awarded to projects that included green stormwater management components, including projects in Syracuse, New York and Gladstone, Missouri.
The Connective Corridor project in Syracuse created more bikeable and walkable streets to encourage active transportation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and incorporated green infrastructure elements such as tree trenches and porous pavements. TIGER grants funding was available to any public entity, including local governments, counties, port authorities, tribal governments, and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs).
