To date, the Unity Fund has raised $400,000 from cash and online donations. The fund has also received a commitment for $12 million from the San Diego County Partnership to Protect San Diegans. Supporting these priorities protects vulnerable residents and helps stabilize families. How is this different from other crisis initiatives?

United for San Diego represents an unprecedented $70 million collaboration between our region’s major philanthropic organizations due to government funding cuts. Spurred by deep cuts to publicly funded safety-net programs, this united response rises to meet the greatest challenge our community has faced since the COVID-19 pandemic.

San Diego Unity Fund provides a simple, trusted way for San Diegans to give today – whatever they can afford – to help others. How much are you trying to raise and grant? United for San Diego partners have increased their annual giving by $70 million to respond quickly to urgent needs and welcome contributions from other businesses and organizations.

The funders have been on different timelines to increase their giving but have increasingly sought to align their responses wherever possible. Partners are aligning their strategies and considering additional giving next year beyond their current commitments.

The Unity Fund at SDF invites every resident and business who calls San Diego home to make a donation to help meet the community needs created by cuts to publicly funded safety net programs. The fund charges no administrative fees, ensuring every dollar goes directly to nonprofits providing food, shelter, health, and support for innovative practices to meet these community needs.

The County of San Diego is one of several partners investing in the Unity Fund through its Partnership to Protect San Diegans so that critical services can be delivered through trusted community nonprofits.

Community foundations like San Diego Foundation often partner with public entities during times of emergency and crisis, like we did during the COVID-19 pandemic. Community foundations raise and mobilize funds quickly, as well as identify and direct resources efficiently to address the most pressing needs in San Diego communities. Who is eligible to apply for funding?

Eligible 501(c)(3) organizations and fiscally sponsored projects that serve residents of San Diego County may apply for funding. Alignment with at least one focus area – Housing (homeless diversion and prevention), Food Security, Healthcare Access – is required.

What types of grants are available? Grants prioritize near-term, high-impact services in the three focus areas. Award sizes and the number of grants per cycle may vary.

Who administers the Unity Fund? San Diego Unity Fund is held and administered by San Diego Foundation. Grantmaking decisions are made collaboratively by United for San Diego Grantmaking Committee to ensure alignment and responsiveness to community needs.

Applications are reviewed for community need, organizational capacity, impact, reach, and the ability to deploy funds quickly. Is there funding available through the Partnership to Protect San Diegans? The Partnership to Protect San Diegans is not an open funding opportunity.

This public-philanthropic partnership includes two major parts. The first is the Matching Stabilization Fund run by San Diego Foundation, which will preserve up to $16 million in county-contracted nonprofit programs this fiscal year that may otherwise be affected by federal funding changes and budget cuts.

Funding through the Matching Stabilization Fund has already been committed to a group of existing County-contracted nonprofit programs identified by the County of San Diego. What reporting is required if my nonprofit receives a grant? Specifics, including impact outcomes, are included in the grant agreement(s).
