Veterans Critical Assistance Grant If you are an honorably discharged veteran, especially a Purple Heart Recipient, you should not have to choose between paying critical bills and putting food on the table.

After all you have sacrificed for us, our Veterans Critical Assistance Grants are one way we can give back to you. The Purple Heart Foundation can provide up to $3,000 Critical Assistance Grants for past-due utility, rent, and mortgage payments, or emergency automotive repairs, for example. These are one-time grants, and funds are paid directly to creditors.

The Purple Heart Foundation (PHF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that raises funds to support our nation’s veterans and their families. Over the past 60 years, the Foundation has funded important programs, services and more. PURPOSE : To provide emergency financial assistance to eligible veterans and their families.

The Grant recipient must be either: (a) an honorably discharged veteran and be able to provide a copy of his/her DD214 when requested; or (b) the widow or widower of an honorably discharged veteran and be able to provide a copy of the veteran’s DD214 and marriage and death certificates. All applicants must submit a completed Veteran’s Critical Assistance Grant application.

Veterans Critical Assistance Grant funds may be used for past due bills and emergency debts, such as, but not limited to, past due rent, utilities, car payments, minor car repairs, and more. Bills must be delinquent to be considered. Grant funds are paid directly to the creditor, and statements showing name, address, account numbers, and current balance must be provided.

Screenshots are not acceptable. The total balance due to the creditor (or creditors) at the time of this application cannot exceed $3,000. The Foundation grant policy prohibits paying down debts.

Veterans Critical Assistance Grant funds may be used for past-due bills and emergency debts, such as, but not limited to, past-due rent, utilities, car payments, minor car repairs, medical bills, and more. Bills must be delinquent to be considered.

Grant funds are paid directly to the creditor, and statements showing name, address, account numbers, and current balance must be provided. Screenshots are not acceptable because they do not show all the needed information. The total balance due to the creditor (or creditors) at the time of this application cannot exceed $3,000.

00. The Foundation grant policy prohibits paying down debts or paying for or contributing to down payments of any kind. The Foundation does not reimburse the veteran for previous bill payments or repair payments.

All requests must be approved by the grant committee before funds are paid. Once approved, Veteran Critical Assistance Grants are paid directly to the creditor by the Purple Heart Foundation, not to the veteran. Except for minor car repairs, bills must be delinquent to be considered for assistance.

We cannot assist with vehicle repossessions . Mortgage/Rent payments are considered past due only after the grace period for making payments is exhausted. This is the date a late fee will be charged for non-payment.

The veteran must be able to provide a current copy of the past-due statements or notice and/or cut-off notices to the current residence. Screenshots are not acceptable. Statements must include the veteran’s name, address, and account number, the balance due, and the mailing address for payments.

An invoice/estimate is required for all car repairs from a licensed garage or dealership. The total repair cost cannot exceed our grant limit of $3,000. 00.

We cannot provide grant funds for a portion of the total cost. A copy of the current vehicle registration and current proof of insurance is required. Payments will not be made on previous car repairs.

The committee will review the estimate, and you will be notified whether the committee will fund the repair. The Foundation does not make online payments. Payments to creditors are made by check and mailed by first-class mail through the Post Office.

One lifetime grant per veteran. Recipients of the Veteran Critical Assistance grant program may not reapply for this grant, and/or will they be approved for more than one grant. The total grant amount may not exceed $3,000.

00. If approved, the grant amount will be for the total of the allowable bills submitted, not to exceed $3,000. 00.

Some grants will not reach the $3,000. 00 limit. Partial payments or payments to reduce debt are prohibited; therefore, grant applications will not be approved if the past-due debt owed exceeds the maximum grant amount of $3,000.

00. Grants may NOT be processed for expenses such as taxes, child support, child care, fines/fees associated with civil or criminal offenses, motor vehicle registrations, towing or impound fees, car rentals, licenses, tuition, books, credit card debt or personal loans, security deposits, first month’s rent or down payments of any kind, moving expenses, or car purchases or repossessions.

All submitted bills are subject to review by the grant committee. Those receiving grant funds will be required to sign the grant acceptance and publicity release form provided by the Purple Heart Foundation prior to receiving the grant. Those receiving grant funds must write an acknowledgment letter to the Purple Heart Foundation’s Board of Directors.

NOTE: The grant application cannot be submitted before the billing past due date. Once the bill is in past due status, you can submit your application. Once your bill is past due and you have a statement from the creditor indicating past due status, you can submit a grant.

Grant applications will be held for 14 days. The grant application will be closed if the veteran does not send the requested documents within 14 days. If we close your file, you will need to reapply if the application process is still open.

Grants are made on a first-come, first-served basis, so it is important to send your documentation as soon as we contact you. We communicate exclusively through email. It is the responsibility of applicants to check their email (including SPAM/Junk folders) regularly after an application is submitted, as we may require additional information to be submitted promptly.

The Critical Assistance Grant application process is closed for this quarter and will reopen on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The GI Bill helps you in your educational pursuits after your military service is complete, but it doesn’t cover everything. That’s where we come in.

The Purple Heart Foundation offers scholarships that assist with expenses and are paid directly to the school that you are enrolled in. Whether it’s a college or university, community college, or vocational training that results in a certification, we fill in some of the gaps that the G. I.

Bill may leave, or help offset some of the costs you may have. Our scholarships are available to Purple Heart recipients and their direct descendants, including spouses, children, and grandchildren (great-grandchildren are not eligible). These scholarships can be used to cover the fees associated with higher education, such as tuition, room and board, books, incidental fees, and other direct costs.
