Virginia Humanities Major Grants support cultural nonprofits in developing and delivering public humanities projects that engage audiences with history, literature, and culture. These grants are for initiatives with broader scope and sustained impact, including programs that foster dialogue, interpret cultural resources, and expand access to the humanities. Projects can include community forums, book or film programs, and K-12 curriculum resources.
Rapid Grants (Virginia Humanities) is a grant from Virginia Humanities that funds public humanities projects with a smaller scope and shorter timeline at cultural nonprofits across Virginia. Awarded twice per year on alternating cycles with Regular Grants, these grants support timely opportunities, pilot initiatives, or discrete programs engaging audiences with humanities content, including community forums, oral histories, exhibitions, media projects, K-12 curriculum resources, and teacher professional development. Eligible applicants are 501(c)(3) nonprofits or other eligible organizations in Virginia; organizations may hold only one active Virginia Humanities grant at a time. Awards are up to $3,500 per project, paid in full upon decision, for projects lasting up to nine months. The 2026 cycle opens July 1 with a deadline of July 31, 2026.
The AFID Infrastructure Grant program closes October 30, 2026. Awards top out at $50,000, they are reimbursable, and only a political subdivision can apply. The August round put $507,000 into 14 projects at an average of about $36,000.
