org Available On Air Stations WFOS - The Time Machine Radio Virginia Humanities at WHRO, a regional humanities center located at WHRO Public Media, has announced winners for the second year of its grant program supporting Hampton Roads’ museums, libraries, historic sites, and other cultural nonprofits.
Following a successful inaugural cycle that funded 11 nonprofit projects, this year's program funded 10 local winning organizations — continuing to invest in humanities-centered storytelling across the region.
Organizations located within the 21 local school divisions that define the WHRO Hampton Roads service area were invited to apply for up to $6,000 for projects that explore the stories of Hampton Roads—its history, people, communities, and cultural traditions—as well as issues and questions that impact the lives of Virginians in the present day. Grant recipients are selected by the Humanities at WHRO Advisory Board .

This new program offers an exciting opportunity for nonprofits to explore our region’s history and heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for the communities we serve," said WHRO Public Media’s President and CEO Bert Schmidt. Virginia Humanities at WHRO is one of two regional humanities centers opened by Virginia Humanities in 2024. It is administered through WHRO Public Media.
“Since our founding, our mission has been to support and bring the humanities to all Virginians,” said Virginia Humanities’ executive director Matthew Gibson. “The regional center initiative is integral to our efforts to help all Virginians to feel connected to their local communities by better understanding the histories and cultures of the places where they live and work every day. ” Grant applications opened on January 1, 2026.
