The Virtual Institute for the Carbon Cycle (VICC) - Schmidt Sciences The Virtual Institute for the Carbon Cycle (VICC) VICC aims to reduce uncertainty in the global carbon cycle by an order of magnitude in order to inform effective climate policy and solutions. Carbon emissions are fundamentally altering our planet—driving temperature increases, disrupting weather patterns, and shifting habitable zones.
To design effective climate interventions and accurately assess their outcomes, we need precise carbon cycle accounting and a deeper understanding of Earth system responses to emissions reductions and greenhouse gas removal. Currently, significant uncertainties in carbon flux measurements, especially at regional and continental scales, limit our ability to forecast climate impacts and develop targeted solutions.
These knowledge gaps also hinder the creation of sustainable, evidence-based policies. VICC addresses critical knowledge gaps for the global carbon cycle through comprehensive scientific research focused on improving the accuracy of global carbon budget measurements by an order of magnitude. Through integrated observing and modeling efforts, VICC aims to provide the scientific foundation needed for effective climate action.
Our work encompasses: – Precise quantification of all sources and sinks within major global carbon reservoirs—from the atmosphere to terrestrial ecosystems and oceans – Tracking carbon fluxes between these interconnected systems with unprecedented accuracy – Developing high-resolution measurements at regional and continental scales – Robust modeling to bring new observations to bear on the community’s understanding of the global carbon cycle – Delivering reliable data on sub-annual timescales to support responsive policy decisions Enhance present-day understanding by mapping the precise uptake, storage, and transformation of anthropogenic emissions across time and space, improving global carbon budget accuracy by an order of magnitude.
Develop policy-relevant data and model products by analyzing carbon cycle dynamics that align with governance frameworks and stakeholder needs, enabling clear distinction between natural and human-driven components. Advance projections of the evolution of land and ocean carbon sinks in a changing climate over decades to centuries, including early identification of potential tipping points and abrupt changes.

Schmidt Sciences opened a 'Scaling AI Safety for a Multi-Agent World' program with awards up to $1 million and an August 8, 2026 deadline. Against a backdrop of federal research slowdowns, here is why private science philanthropy matters more than ever, how these funders differ from federal agencies, and how researchers should approach them.

The three research aims target misalignment under distribution shift, predictive-validity evaluations, and oversight of superhuman systems. Here is why the structure favors team-based proposals.
Read articleThe U.S. Government Policy for Stopping High-Risk Life Sciences Research, released July 28, 2026 under EO 14292 and implemented at NIH through NOT-OD-26-101, replaces mitigation with prohibition. It bans dangerous gain-of-function research outright, gates potential DGOF behind government-wide review, and creates International Research of Concern — a research-security regime wearing biosafety clothing. Penalties run to five-year debarment and False Claims Act exposure.
