Awards & Grants for Writers This award is open to authors and illustrators of Hispanic/Latinx/Ibero-American heritage who are early in their career (1-3 traditionally published books) or not yet traditionally published. Sponsored by Illustrator Angela Dominguez and author Meg Medina , this award is open to writers and illustrators of Hispanic/Latinx/Ibero-American heritage. Each year, one writer and one illustrator will be selected.
The winners will each receive $500 along with a one-year SCBWI membership, and a coaching session to further their creative career. This award is open to authors and illustrators of Hispanic/Latinx/Ibero-American heritage who are early in their career (1-3 traditionally published books) or not yet traditionally published. Please note: Self-published is not considered traditionally published for this award.
All applicants must be current SCBWI members and have heritage from the following countries/territories: Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Saint-Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Spain, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela.
A full PB manuscript OR the first 10 pages a chapter book, MG or YA novel or graphic novel script along with a one-page synopsis. Please note: the submission itself does not have to center on Hispanic/Latinx/Ibero-American experience, identity, or characters. An autobiographical statement and career summary in less than 250 words.
Please be sure to specify your heritage (i.e., “I am second-generation Honduran-American. ” “I am Chilean. ”) and include author/translator information, if applicable.
We are currently able to accept manuscripts written in English or Spanish. Illustrators should submit: Rough Picture Book Dummy: A rough picture book dummy that includes the entire text of the story, fully illustrated with sketches, and two finished illustrations. An autobiographical statement and career summary in less than 250 words.
