Women’s Breast Health Fund | Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham Women's Breast Health Fund The Women’s Breast Health Fund is a field of interest fund that provides support for holistic breast cancer care for women and their loved ones throughout the region served by the Community Foundation (Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair and Walker counties).

The Fund’s mission covers the entire breast cancer continuum from diagnosis through follow up care throughout the life of the survivor with this focus: to make life better for women and their loved ones who are facing this disease.

Dedicated to making life better for those who are impacted by breast cancer The Women’s Breast Health Fund (WBHF) is a permanent endowment of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham which was established in 2009 by a group of anonymous donors. The WBHF will fulfill the donors’ wishes today and forever.

The WBHF is dedicated to making life better for women who are facing breast cancer, their loved ones and the healthcare professionals who care for breast cancer survivors. This mission extends across the continuum of breast cancer care, from the time of diagnosis through follow-up care and every subsequent stage of life. The WBHF has provided grants to nonprofits in the Greater Birmingham area since 2010.

These collaborative efforts led to the Breast Cancer Survivorship Rehabilitation Initiative (BCSRI), which is now branded Forge Breast Cancer Survivorship Center . Forge is an unprecedented collaboration of all 5 major healthcare systems in Birmingham, and launched client services in 2016.

Forge assists survivors and co-survivors in taking an active role in their journey with breast cancer by offering support, knowledge, strength and direction. Through Forge all those touched by breast cancer can bond with others to Forge a new future. Qualifying nonprofit organizations interested in competing for a grant must complete the Brief Proposal form online by 11:59 p. m. Sept.

28, 2026 . Organizations will be notified by Oct. 12, 2026, if they have been selected to move forward in the process and submit a Full Proposal.

The WBHF uses a two-stage grantmaking process. Qualifying nonprofit organizations interested in competing for a grant must complete the Brief Proposal form online by September 28, 2026. Organizations will be notified by October 12, 2026 if they have been selected to move forward in the process and submit a Full Proposal.

The WBHF uses several criteria in selecting grant recipients. These include the fit between our stated focus and the programs offered by applicants, the experience and success of applicants in the work for which they are seeking funding, the overall financial health of the applicant organization, and collaboration with other breast cancer organizations and programs.

Foundation staff and the WBHF Advisory Committee review grant proposals, perform site visits, and meet with applicants as needed. If a grant is ultimately awarded, staff works in partnership with the grantee to refine a final evaluation and reporting plan. The WBHF recently completed an updated Community Needs Assessment that can be found below.

Although the WBHF has as its mission funding work aimed at making the lives of survivors and their families better throughout the breast cancer continuum, particular areas of interest include, but are not limited to: patient navigation, the role and support of the caregiver, education and communication tools for both survivors and caregivers, support of the healthcare team, needs of long term survivors, exercise and wellness programs, workplace education, telemedicine, sexuality and spirituality.

While the WBHF does not fund laboratory research or drug trials, applications centered on community-based participatory research are accepted. The WBHF will also consider support for capital projects with an imminent start date and deemed clearly relevant to the mission of the WBHF.

Note: Priority consideration will be given to applications that address findings in the WBHF Community Needs Assessment as well as demonstrating collaboration with other breast cancer organizations and programs within the five-county region. Clair, and Walker counties, delivering a comprehensive community assessment to the Women’s Breast Health Fund. The project employed a multi-method approach, including a survey instrument, key constituent interviews, and focus groups to gather insights from caregivers, survivors, healthcare professionals, and non-profit leaders.

Anyone who’s ever been affected by breast cancer knows that the impact of cancer lasts long after active treatment ends. A cancer diagnosis and the treatments that follow can have long term effects on the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing and can have a lasting impact on the survivor’s family too. This is why the Women’s Breast Health Fund exists.

“This was the niche that the Women’s Breast Health Fund was going to serve,” says program director Kim Rogers , reflecting on the fund’s origins. “Not to do research, not to do actual medical treatment, because that was being done really well. ” But the donors and committee behind the Women’s Breast Health Fund knew that patients needed more.
