WSI Ergonomic Initiative Grant Program

WSI Ergonomic Initiative Grant Program is sponsored by North Dakota Workforce Safety and Insurance (WSI). This program provides financial assistance to employers to purchase ergonomic equipment. While primarily for employers, Cindy's innovative ergonomic tools could potentially be considered for adoption by businesses seeking to reduce cumulative-type injuries.

Ergonomic Grant Program | North Dakota Workforce Safety & Insurance Due to strong participation and demand, WSI will implement a temporary pause on new Ergonomic Initiative Grant applications beginning at 5 p. m. Thursday, June 11.

Applications submitted before the pause will continue through the review process. Employers with eligible applications submitted before the pause remain eligible for grant funding if approved. Read the full announcement and frequently asked questions.

Help Your Employees Address Ergonomic Risks Ergonomic issues often begin as minor aches or discomfort. Over time, these issues can develop into serious injuries and costly workers’ compensation claims. The Ergonomic Grant Program supports employers in identifying and addressing ergonomic risks early.

Prior to the temporary pause, Phase 4 of the Ergonomic Grant Program was available to all active WSI policyholders. See the Temporary Pause Notice above for current program status. Participation in earlier phases is not required.

The program provides access to professional ergonomic assessments, educational support, and grant funding for approved ergonomic improvements. WSI partners with experienced healthcare professionals across North Dakota to conduct ergonomic assessments at employer worksites. These assessments identify risk factors and provide practical recommendations to help reduce or eliminate cumulative-type injuries.

WSI covers 75% of assessment costs Employers are responsible for the remaining 25% Providers bill employers directly for the employer portion Educational ergonomic services are covered at 100% by WSI Employers are eligible for grant funding once the assessments have been completed. Funding supports ergonomic interventions recommended through the assessment.

WSI covers 75% of approved ergonomic equipment costs Funding is available up to the maximum eligible amount The Ergonomic Grant Program is available to any employer: Who has an active WSI policy with employees or has selected optional coverage on the account. WSI encourages employers to participate in this program to ensure ergonomic concerns are being addressed.

To be eligible for a grant award, the employer must be in good standing with WSI for a minimum of one year. Financial Assistance Eligibility Chart Before submitting your application, we strongly encourage employers to take a close look at their workplace loss history and high-risk areas. Understanding where risks exist will help you make the most of this program.

Review your loss history — examine past workplace injury claims to identify patterns, recurring incidents, or departments with elevated risk. Identify high-risk or high-hazard areas — consider tasks that involve repetitive motion, heavy lifting, awkward postures, or prolonged static positions.

Prioritize where it matters most — targeting your highest-risk areas in your application ensures grant funding has the greatest impact on employee safety. Not sure where to start or how to identify your high-risk areas?

A WSI Safety Consultant can guide you through the process, helping you interpret your loss history, pinpoint hazards, and focus your efforts where they will make the greatest difference for your employees and workplace All steps for the Ergonomic Grant Program are completed through the myWSI portal. The employer completes the Ergonomic Grant Program Application online using WSI’s portal, myWSI.

Access to the Ergonomic Grant Program Application is granted to your organization’s myWSI Account Administrator. If you do not have access to myWSI, contact your organization’s myWSI Account Administrator or WSI’s Customer Service at 800-777-5033 or email [email protected] . WSI will review the application, and the employer will be notified of the decision.

If approved, next steps are: Employer selects provider, and provide will complete ergonomic assessment Once assessment report is completed by provider, the employer will submit their budget request for ergonomic equipment or interventions identified by the provider. Once budget is approved, Grant Agreement must be signed be the employer and WSI. You will receive notification regarding your budget request within 30 days of submission.

Employer is eligible to purchase equipment/intervention. Once the employer receives the equipment, they are eligible to submit for reimbursement which must include invoice and proof of payment. Reimbursement will be processed within 30 days of receiving all required information.
